"Who did it this time?" "Not It!"

"Look for Field Sign Damage." Dr. Beusching tells our team as we venture out on yet another adventure - what does this phrase mean to you "Field Sign Damage"?

These photos will give you examples of what is - Field Sign Damage

Evidence A and B

Evidence C and D

Evidence E and F

Scientists are expected to look for field damage as they are working out on the field for a few reasons:
1.To know which animals are active in the area.
2. Depending on a particular season, we will also know the variety of animals in a given season.
3. To accurately know the density or population of the animals.
4. To be aware of the predator and prey relationship in each area.
How did we do this?
1. We were divided into 3 teams in a given specific measured area and dropped of into our assigned areas( think like a survivor, who gets to bring home the most specimen)- this is also called "TO TRANSECT"
2. We walked, walked and walked but kept our eyes open to everything - from tree damage, poop evidence on the ground, burrows, and dens.
3. Eyes open, ears perked, we timed and recorded when we began to everytime we found an "evidence". we kept a log as we invesitgated
4. Any unknown evidence had to be bagged and brought back to Dr. Newman for analysis.
5. Curiousity will always be one of our greatest lifeskill - we investigated down low and up high and found great evidence - but I can only post so many pictures...

You are expected to look closely at these, think, ponder, get your parents to help you!
What do you think these field damage specimens or samples are?
Which animal do you think did this? Post your answers by using my labels - Specimen A is....Try to guess all of my photos!
Good Luck !
Onward we go Boys and Girls!

Congratulations, Mrs. Tang!
It is very exciting!
I enjoyed reading your research and blogs.
It has been a while since my family saw you the last time so it was very nice to see you on videos.
I am showing your site to both Julian and Reina after school.
We all miss you so much.
Good luck!

I think specimen A is a dead frog. The evidence is the body structure. It is also a possibility that A is a lizard dragged into a water source by a predator. -HH

i think evidence A is a dead frog. How i figured this out is that it is laying on it's back. Yet, I wonder how it died, maybe it has to do with pollution? - LW :)

Picture A is what I think is a dead frog. Picture B looks like some sticks that the beavers were munching on. Picture C looks like more than one scat of some kind. Picture D looks like a beavers dam and they may have been involved in picture B. Picture E looks like either some bones or maby bird scat. Picture F I think it looks kind of like fur.-GB

Field Sign damage is environmental damage caused by pollution and Global Warming.
I think Specimen A is a dead frog and Specimen B is many gnawed trees.
Specimen C might be poop or the things on a certain type of tree.
Specimen D is a beaver dam made of sticks and Specimen E is the leftover bones of a prey.
Specimen F is a half eaten fish someone ate.

I think that picture A is a frog that died. I think that the sticks in picture B was cut down by a beaver to make a dam. I think the scat in picture C is the beavers that made the dam in picture D. I think that the bone in picture E is a bird bone. I think the fethers in picture F is also the birds just like the birds bone in picture E. I think that the bids fethers came from a nest that fell out of a tree.

I think that field sign damage is when animals make space and shelter in a way that it damages the area. It could also be when animals leave there food's skin, bones and feathers behind like in A, E, and F. Picture B and D are signs of beavers. Picture C is poop.-RA

Evidence A is an animal in the water that is a frog and got hurt by a pedator trying tom attack it.
Evidence B is what I think are sticks and were hurt by a woodpecker.
Evidence C is poop from a larger animal because of the larger size.
Evidence D is a bever dam that had water that dried up.
Evidence E is a picture of a bone from an animal such as a chipmunk.
Evidence F is a covering that you put traps inside and protects it at night.-JB

Evidence A & B-the dead frog maybe hurt from a storm or a predator attack
Evidence C-the poop/droppings are probably from a large animal because it has a larger size than small mammals' poop and since it is red, the animal who produced it is probably injured
Evidence D-it is a beaver dam that must have been damaged by a different animal and the beavers that live in the dam are probably trying to build a new one
Evidence E-the finger is pointing to a bone of a small mammals
Evidence F- this picture shows that an animal has shed or grown up because of sickness being passed around
-GA...to be continued.........
