We caught some mini mammals!
We have success! Of the 100 traps we set, we caught 8 small mammals, which is actually a pretty high number for this time of year! (More on that later)
The link to the video for one of the catches is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iv28VDiq0M4
As far as the small mammals, we caught 6 red-backed voles (Two were from the traps another teacher and I set up) , a deer mouse (shown on the video) and a chipmunk (Which can get very aggressive so we let our instructors deal with those). It was interesting to see them up close! Except for the chipmunk, the mammals were very mellow and easy to handle. All of this data we collect will be used to add to the years of data that they already have. Results will be coming soon!
As we talked to the scientists, we all realized that science research can be difficult and hard to collect and decipher (Figure out). Let's take a look at the first part of that, which is the collection of data. I have two questions for you to figure out.
Journal #3
Part 1: Setting up traps in a 100 square meter area does not necessarily give enough data to give accurate numbers. Here is my question: What other methods can you find animal #s? (Abundance and distribution)
Part 2: Going along with the first part of my blog today, why is a low number of small mammals expected for this time of year? Please use the word "primary productivity" in your answer. You can look it up in your book if you need to!

Thats awesome Mr. Wolfe! That is def a cool picture of you holding it too haha. I just got back from Europe so thats why its my first time commenting. Everything went really well in class today! Im sure you're having a great time in Novia Scotia with the research and i look forward to reading your future articles! PS: Tough loss for Mich St, but they did an unbelievable job to get to the National Championship! And tennis is going well. But Drew lost to Danny haha. And i have to play #2 against North next week, it will be a big match since Tam wont be there
what no wolves in the traps coach?
you know the use of the plastic bag in that video offends me after all we have learned about how bad it is to use plastic because its so expensive to recycle and how that bag will end up in the ocean suffocating poor jellyfish and the like (well, maybe not jellyfish... those arent cute so i dont really care about them).
in addition to that, i will be flagging the video for animal cruelty.
anyway, hope nova scotia's great! we all got 100s on your vocab quiz today. wooooohoooooooo (hardest quiz ive ever taken...)

Nice catch Mr.Wolfe and i couldnt really hear so what kind of mouse was that
hi Mr. Wolfe
eww lol
the lil mice looks helpless
why are you collecting them again was it
because you where seeing how they live in the enviorment??
Ashlee cousin
Glad you guys are doing well! The mouse is a Deer Mouse. We are collecting them to count population density in a given area to figure out their numbers compared to other years at the same month. We will be looking at the data tomorrow! Good luck in the tennis match Sean...keep me updated!
