Kejimkujik National Park

Hey everyone!  Here are some pics of my trip to Kejimkujik National Park.  This is about an hour away from where I am staying, which is a town called Cherry Hill.

The tree above is a Hemlock.  As you can see, they are obviously very good at "anchoring" their roots.  One of the teachers and I thought one of them needed a hug so there ya go!  As you can see from the yellow sign, Canada protects their species as well.  This one was for a type of turtle that lives in the area we hiked at.  We also ran into some deer.  We found some of their droppings along the hike too.  More on that this week!

The pic next to the deer is of a lake in the park.  We did a hike and looked for signs of mammal life in certain areas of the park.  More on that this week.

Journal Question #5:  Look at the first picture on the top of this entry.  It is a part of the forest that has a lot of Hemlock trees.  Is this primary succession or secondary succession?  How can you tell?  Explain!

Hey Mr. Wolfe! hope you are enjoying your trip, answering your question, I would say it is a secondary succession? ....well im not pretty sure but in the picture it looks like the trees that are laying down are the result of a previous event which could have been a forest fire. Also I found a website which helped me decide: http://www.novanewsnow.com/article-133610-Setting-fires-at-Kejimkujik-National-Park.html
I hope Im right!! , thanks!!!

It looks like primary succession because the trees appear to be growing out of bare rock, and there seems to be no evidence of soil already there
