"The Green Belt Movement"

Wangari Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her collaborative efforts to improve her country's environment and empower others. Many books provide biographies of her life and her personal accomplishments, but the "Green Belt Movement" which she facillitated continues to provide renewable resources to the people of her homeland, Kenya. The Green Belt Movement created jobs, mobilized communities to problem-solve together, raised awareness of environmental issues, resulted in reforestation, and improved the image of women in Kenya. You can read and hear more about Wangari Maathai at:

What type of mobilization can you imagine in our community? How can we increase and maintain awareness about environment issues here in Oklahoma?

I am a member of the Oklahoma Food Coop and it has been a beneficial relationship. Maybe this network of Oklahomans is a place to start to raise awareness.

I think Wangari Maathai is an amazing person. Not only did she improve the life for many people in Kenya but she also helped raise social image of Kenya women.

I think that you would obviously need to raise awareness but to a way higher level than it has ever been. For example.. Do more commercials, campaigns, advertisements, etc. Just stuff like that. Because I know people see the trash but I also know it doesn't register that it may be ruining our state.

I think there are alot more people out there that have not been recognized for the contribution to save our environment. They diserve some kind of credit too!

Josh, I really appreciate your comment that people don't realize that litering by throwing down a couple of pieces of trash can cause a much more serious problem. How can we make people more aware of the affects?
