Giving Thanks

The turkey has been dissected, the pumpkin pie devoured, the football game is on. But there is so much more for which we can be thankful. First on my list is family, and the opportunity to visit them way here south in Miami. There are many other blessings on my list, too: my husband and I are both working, for example. We are in good health. Our children are making us proud.
But special for me is the opportunity to observe and share creation. The wondrous complexity of our world, our universe, never fails to amaze me. Some say this intricacy is itself evidence of a Supreme Being, a creative Intelligence that designed all we see. Others observe evolution (more fact than theory!) and do not see a need to credit a Higher Power. Still others feel that these two views are not mutually exclusive.
However you think or believe, I hope you enjoy the photos and videos I post here, and learn a little about our world. And give respect… and thanks… where due.
The picture above was taken at the Paynes Prairie rest stop off I-75 in Gainesville, Florida. The gray strands hanging like tinsel from the live oak tree is Spanish Moss, an epiphyte that is not parasitic.

To comment on the whole evolution v.s. creation debate, I personally believe in a combonation of the two. I feel that a supernatural power created life, but that life adapted and evolved into some of the more complex organisms, in order to fit an ever-changing enviorment. I mean even in the human race we see variations that show this. The bible talks about the first humans,Adam and Eve, being born in a once vibrant, and lush with plants, portion of the middle east. Then it tells of all the Earth's people coming from them, however we all don't look middle eastern. Those who traveled to the warm equator areas of Africa and Austrailia turned black to adapt to the lage amount of sun. Though those who lived farther north or in darker or cooler climates grew more pale since the need for more melon and darker pigment deminished. Now we have all kinds of skin types and colors. Just some food for the thought!

Thanks for your post, Taylor. Your view on human evolution is interesting. But how do you reconcile the DNA evidence that traces human ancestry back to Africa? Can it be that Eden maybe wasn't in the Middle East? Or that the Genesis story of Adam and Eve was more of an allegory than a history?

As a starter, I would love to talk with you more about your viewpoints on creation vs evolution. Here is my viewpoint though. As for the first question, it never says anywhere in the Bible that the Garden of Eden was located in the Middle East, it just says the East, so no one really knows where it was located!
As for if the book of Genesis could be an allegory, my opinion is this: God did it. We are not here by accident, nor are we here merely to please ourselves. We owe our very existance to God. Every helium atom, every spiral galaxy, every living creature exists because God wanted it to. We have not evolved from anything. In Genesis 2:7 it says, "The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
He created us and we exist. However, as to why we all look different, that comes from climate and adaptation. But as I said, that is just my viewpoint. I hope you have a safe trip back and we will see you soon! :)

Megan, I appreciate your well-expressedd opinion on creation vs. evolution. It's a topic that generates more heat than light in many cases. I hope this to be a place you can express yourself.
