Monday the 20th

The food is good here, but I'm always just a little hungry.
We went to Cook's Lake today. This property is a long term study site and is a mixture of grassland and woods. Interestingly, the woods aren't old growth because most of Nova Scotia was logged centuries ago. So, they create interesting habitat and opportunities to measure mammal populations and success in comparative habitat.

We learned some great things about horns and antlers and adaptations for these. You MUST see the video that Mr. Wignall has done. Skulls can teach so much, if you'll just try and watch their jaws move!

A must see:
Part One of Skulls of Knowledge
Part Two of Skulls of Knowledge

Here is a little video about the hemlock forest we hiked in yesterday:

This is a video of us in the grassland trapping grid.

The ticks were all over us yesterday. They are wood ticks, so they're not dangerous to us, it's just creepy having them on you. I'm going to wear more white today so I can see them easier when they are on me. I haven't been bitten so far!

You could help me by researching ticks a little and let me know some facts about wood ticks vs. deer ticks.

If you can't see the videos, you're missing out, so be sure to go to youtube and find them. You'll find them easily by searching for ppembroke.

Have a super day. It's supposed to rain here today, which is a bit of a bummer! Oh well, the science must go on! See ya!

Mister Penbroke. Our class is very interested in the stuff you get to do. Mr.Hull says that your days are kind of like his at school. "dealing poopie sstufff and having to do weird stuff". ha ha.
I showed your videos to my m om tody and she was really interested too. How did you find those bones? the videos were not working that showed teh talk about the skulls.
We have a talk going about what would happen with diseases in northern america if the summers did stop, or if the winters were realy short. We talked about how insects would probly be more abundant and that would let other animals live and reproduce more. Then we saw how if one animal that usually dies in winter, or hibernated, would be around to eat all through the winter. We think that could be bad for the balance of food. You also talked about disease....gross. Disease would spread more because animals would be in more contact with echother. Mr. Hull said that's why teachers like summer break.
Another thing you made us think about was ticks. that made us talk about other disease carrying bugs adn animals. If their seasons are longer than they could multiply faster, and spread faster. More animals might be alive because of the food, bt then they might pass the diseases around faster because they are so many.
We think you should cover your legs with some tick spray. Sometimes they clim up into your socks and pants. You should be careful. Ticks are all around Paradise. We are used to them, but they are still gross.
We have a present for you too. Here is a cool picture. It may give you nightmaires! http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/itchtick_AmericanDogTick_2.jpg

I looked about the dog ticks and deer ticks. Is the dog tick mostly not in the east, and the deer tick is mostly in the north east of north America? We don't think we have deer ticks to much in paradise because they carry lime disease. Is that true?

We are reading your posts everyday after state testing.
