We also continued to count deer skat in several different areas. As we approached our trail, we noticed several white-tailed deer so we decided it would be a good area to survey for skat. Needless to say, the area which we covered did not contain much deer skat.
A few questions I would like for you to think about/Google and submit your answers to Mrs. Fricke in wrap-up or during class on Tuesday. Feel free to also include any other questions which you may have for me and I will try to respond to them!
1. Why do you think the boardwalk (refer to pic) was constructed through the hemlock forest?
2. See if you can Google and find out about the Acadian forest zone. What type of trees/vegetation would you find there?
3. What is a habitat?
4. What is an ecosystem?
5. One kilometer is equivalent to how many miles?
6. One hectare is equal to how many acres?

I am so psyched about going back tomarrow to talk in class about your trip in more detail and what you have been doing. I hope you have more fun the rest of your trip and can tell us lots of great stories when you get back!!!!
~Julie :)
i know this is really of subject but can we use your pics and vidoes for a news show or should i get them when you get back?
You may certainly use any pics I post! Hope you all are learning something! Mrs. Metz
Hey Mrs. Metz!! That pic of the forest looked really cool. I am jealous of you because you get to see the beauty of nature first hand. I have a question about the "Green House". How did it look when you got there and what did you do to make it "homey"?
Your Student Rachel Mc.
I just wanted to tell you that I saw a movie and oddly it made me think of you! Have you ever seen the movie “Tommy Boy” with Chris Farley? Well if you haven’t, there’s this part where they hit a deer with their car and then put it in the back seat. And then the deer comes back to life and completely wrecks the entire car trying to get out of it! =) Seeing the deer made me think of all the animals you must be seeing up in Nova Scotia. But anyway, here is a great tip for you: if you run over any animals with your car (or whatever type of vehicle you’re using for transportation) do NOT put it in the back seat! It will come to life and ruin it!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Okay well I just wanted to say that. HAVE FUN
~Hannah
The forest was beautiful and I wll share more about it with all of you when I return! As for the green house......it did not look very appealing when we drove up. When we walked in, we all noticed that there was not a tv. It was old and a bit cold inside. I have to admit at that point, I thought my 2 weeks were going to be really hard. However, the house soon took on life! It is the gathering place for the entire team as well as the eating place. With that being said, the entire team is here most of the evening skyping, laughing, listening to music, blogging, talking, etc. In a sense, we have all made it homey with our own personalities. It is really quite fun! Two bathrooms between 11 people is a little rough as times, though!!!!
Hannah-
I have seen that movie! Funny stuff!! Actually, our van has suddenly slammed on the brakes a few times--once to look at a turkey and once to look at a porcupine. Good thing these stops were intended. Our scientists have a very good eye for spotting wildlife off in the distance and it is not uncommon for them to stop in the middle of a two-lane highway! However, I must explain that there are very few cars on the roads in this part of Nova Scotia. You can drive 20 miles and pass maybe one car!!! Quite a remote area!
Class Questions for Mrs. Metz:
Brandon: Is there a large number of endangered animals there? If so, what are they?
Bryce: What is the exact purpose of the research being conducted?
Miles/Grant/Russell: In your mark/recapture study, how do you distinguish between re-captured voles….and, if only the hair is being trimmed to mark them, won’t the hair just grow back?
Nick: What are some additional reasons (besides the climate idea) the vole/mice populations are going down in Nova Scotia? (i.e…what’s their major predator…)
Rachel: What got Dr. Chris & Dr. Christina interested in studying wildlife?
All classes: Even if a change in breeding patterns is found, how can you be sure it is caused by climate and not the many other uncontrollable variables in the ecosystem?
All classes: What are your favorite and least favorite experiences so far?
