View from the reef

Outside my window it is raining and windy but at least its above freezing. I am slowly coming around to the fact that in a few days I will be in a radically different climate with unique biotic and abiotic factors. The coral reefs, with their myriad of colorful fish and spiny invertebrates, will be my focus of study.
To my students;
Find the location of San Salvador, Bahamas in Google maps and locate the research station on the northwest corner of the island. Tell me the name of the research station. I also need a list of at least three biotic OR abiotic factors I will encounter. I need your reply by 9:00pm Thursday.

I look forward to being able to share this experience with my students and all others who read this blog. I look forward to collecting data with the scientists and I think the Bahamas will provide a great comparison with the Great Lakes ecosystem and the difficulties it faces.

...for a three hour tour..
Mr Grisanti

The research station is called the Gerace Research Station.
You will be dealing with amount of dissolved gases in the water, the light intensity and different predation.

Hey Geezy,
Sorry I didn't get to this sooner since I know that you really wanted this by Monday. I did my best.
You'll be stationed at the Gerace research center in the Bahamas next week. Yo, check this: You will be encountering abiotic factors such at water temperature, weather, pH levels, salt concentration, and light intensity. Salt concentration is going to affect what species can grow and thrive in this environment contrasting the research trip that you did in the Great Lakes with fresh water. Light intensity could affect how different species grow depending on the amount of light to trigger photosynthesis. Geezy, some biotic factors that you may encounter are parasitism, predation, and disease which every species you encounter will have to deal with. Each species is different depending on these factors but they can hinder and help the species as a whole. Well there you go, Represent AP BIO.

There are plenty of research centres. The most likely out of all of them, though, would be the Gerace Research Centre. There is also the sansal 2007_GRC (possibly a part of the Gerace Research Centre???), Study Abroad - San Salvador, A crazy-looking Russian one, and one aptly named "San Salvador". I had to look at Google Earth as opposed to Google Maps for this one.

There are for distinct zones to this island: yellow, grey, black, and white. The yellow zone is closest to the shore, based on my research, so I am guessing that you are going to be there, scuba diving and swimming and such. This area is submerged some of the time when tides rise.

Most likely when you are scuba diving, you will be in one of the many shallow water reefs, which house hundreds of fish species, and are an intriguing ecosystem to study.

Another interesting thing to note are the plethora of lakes. You will never be far from water, whether you are close to the shore or near the centre of the island.

Despite all the splendours of the island, I would be sure to be especially wary of the Opuntia cactus. This plant has long sharp spines that are capable of easily puncturing one's sneaker and injuring one's foot. It's thorns are little backwards-pointing things that leave a festering wound for weeks, and are extremely hard to take out of one's skin.

This cactus has a predatory relationship with a lizard native to the island, the Cyclura rileyi, also called the Bahamian rock lizard, which would avoid the cactus' sharp spines and eat the fruit, therefore effectively keeping down its population. Unfortunately, pesky humans, feral goats, dogs, rats, and cats have virtually eliminated the species. The Bahamian rock lizard population is still flourishing on one cay, however, where a group of less-pesky humans have been feeding the lizards lettuce, apples and such, breaking one of San Salvador's laws, but most likely saving the species.

In conclusion, the information that you wanted, Mr. Grisanti, is as follows in a rather condensed fashion.
1) Gerace Research Centre
2) Opuntia Cactus
3) Bahamian Rock Lizard
4) Shallow Water Reefs

Yo whats good G-Unit,
For number one, you will be based out of the Gerace Research Center in the Bahamas. Secondizzle, the biotic factors that will affect you are predation, competition, and disease between species. You know what I mean G?

The Gerace Research Center (GRC, formerly the Bahamian Field Station) is located on the shore of Graham's Harbour on the north coast of San Salvador. Some of the biotic factors you may encounter on your trip include numers species of inland fishes, the Black Land Crab (Geocarcinus lateralis), and the endangered rock iguana of San Salvador Island, Bahamas. Various abiotic factors you may study on your trip include the numerous caves on San Salvador Island, Bahamas, and the climate (which is quite different from that of Buffalo, New York).

Hi Mr. Grisanti,
How is everything going?
I just went to check the blog when I realized that my last entry did not appear, so hopefully this works!
In the Bahamas you will be at the Gerace Research Center located on the shore of Graham's Harbour on the North coast of San Salvador. While you are there you will encounter many biotic and abiotic factors, most of which i am jealous about! First, an abiotic factor you will encounter is the sun, and lots of it. Second, a biotic factor is lots of cool different fish and wildlife. Another biotic factor you may encounter is coral, because it is a plant.
Hope you have a great time in the Bahamas!

The answers to the questions you asked are
1)Gerace Research Center
2)sunlight because it can affect how well things grow. All plants need sunlight for photosynthesis, so without it they won't grow.
3)temperature because if it is too cold for something to live, then it obviously won't live there.
4)ph levels of the water can also harm species trying to habituate areas that aren't suitable for them.

I hope all is well in the bahamas

hey mr g. I know this was due Monday but , surprise, no internet in Puerto Ayora! Haha. so its almost redundant for me to do this. but for the sake of everything, you are (gonna be? or already) at the Gerace Research Center. some factors. abiotic would be light , wave force, and temperature. biotic would be the mammals, fish, and flora in the Caribbean. so sorry about the delay and what not.
