Why Are We Measuring Trees?
Why do you think we are measuring all the trees in each plot? This study is concerned with global warming. What is the connection between global warming and the growth of trees? Hint: What do scientists think is one of the things causing global warming, and what is photosynthesis? Send me your ideas.
Here is another vocabulary term: carbon sequestering. What does it mean?

Ms. Catledge,
There was an interesting piece on the Nightly News about biofuels from algae. They discussed how excess CO2 would impact the production of oils in the algae, speeding up the process.
The link is below. It might make for an interesting discussion since you were asking your class about carbon sequestering.
It sure does look like scientists have fun. Field work looks very interesting.

The trees are being measured for a later comparison to determine the effects of deforestation on tree growth and survival. Trees release CO2 when they are cut down. Does a rise in atmospheric temperature stunt tree growth?
Mrs. Henderson's class,
The problem in these plots is not deforestation. Trees do release carbon dioxide when they decay. Why do you think that is true? Did you remember the pocess of photosynthesis? What do trees need to grow?
A rise in atmospheric temperature does affect trees. Trees have a "comfort zone" which is why I am seeing trees that do not grow in our area. What do you think happens to trees when the temperature changes?
Ms. C,
You look like you are having a great experience there. I am jealous! Hug a tree for me!

Janice,
This is a very interesting task. Sounds like you are learning a lot. I was with a group in Knoxville some years back that measured the number of trees that could grow in one square meter of land. To determine this we had to measure a tree's umbrella. I know what you are doing is lots of fun, but I also know it is lots of work. I bet you are incorporating lots of Math into this science expedition.

I really liked that video.
