Hi everyone!
As you know I will be going the Smithsonian Ecological Research Center in Maryland, near the Chesapeake Bay. I m going to participate in a study called, "Climate Change and Fragmented Forests" You know how much we LOVE forests!

I will be "blogging " with you while I am there, so I thought we should start to practice now.
Here is a picture of our Nature Trail~ Does this look familiar?
Think about all you've learned about trees and forest ecology since September. What else would you like to learn about our forest?

Here's a picture of where I'm going. Look at a map and locate the
Chesapeake Bay. Is it North or South of us? What states border the bay?
Big, isn't it? You can see that there are a lot of forests around there. What do you think these forests have in common with ours in Massachusetts? How would you expect them to be different?
I'll be posting pictures and telling you everything I'm doing while I'm there. And I KNOW you'll behave for the substitute!
Ms. Bennett

I wonder what fragmented means? It's in your study title.

I looked fragmented up in the dictionary and the definition is incompleted part. Can you tell me what that means to the forests?

Hi Alicia~ Great questions!! I'm glad you looked up "fragmented". I want you to think about the location of the Chesapeake Bay. It is pretty close to Washington DC and the English settlers came in the 1600's, even before the Pilgrims! What do you think has happened to the forest there with all that going on for so many years? We'll talk about it tomorrow. Ms. Bennett

At December 2, 2008 11:22 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The English settlers probably cleared out some parts of the forest to make room for their houses, and more and more settlers kept on coming in for so many years. I think that's what fragmented means, because if they cleared out parts of the forest to make their houses, that's an incompleted part of the forest.

I wonder what the dorm will look like ? will it be small or will it look like a room you have in your house? I wonder if the food will look different in chesapeak bay than it does here? keara

Dear Mrs. Bennett,
I will change the enviorment by recyciling my water bottles and my paper. I will grow a garden and more plants and flowers. I will reuse glass to make glass art, but if mom says no, I will recyciling. I won't let the computer run. When I am older, I will make an earth-friendly pestiside that will kill wooly adalged, and I will find a kind of frog that eats wooly adalged so there will be no more of that cruel creature.
