Hello classes! I had very smooth flights today to Baltimore. I loved the Detroit airport…I’ll try to get pictures on my return trip so you can see how cool it is! I have met my team and they are wonderful people. I know we will have a great time together. The research facility is much bigger than I expected. I will post pictures tomorrow so you can see the buildings and forest. We ordered pizza for dinner tonight and spent most of the time trying to get the internet connections to work! If you read this in the morning I will be listening to a world famous scientist, Dr. Drake, give a talk entitled "Beyond an Inconvenient Truth", a follow up to former Vice President Al Gore’s movie about global warming. If you read this in the afternoon, I will be learning how to measure trees, tag them, and map their locations so they can be measured again in 5 years. My question for you today is: Do you think our early winter this year is a result of changing weather patterns due to global warming or just normal fluctuations in weather? On what are you basing your opinion?

Two opposing theories from the students:

1. The strong majority of students agree that an early winter is normal and do to normal fluctuations in the weather and seasons. They cited examples such as the last two years have been later winters, while three winters ago we had snow on Halloween. Many also believe that if it were due to global warming, we would see a trend in either getting warmer and warmer or cooler and cooler, not fluctuation like we see.

2. There were a minority of students who believed in the global warming. Most of the students cited the melting ice caps, the rise in CO2 in the air, and the depleting ozone as reasons. The students believe the human footprint is damaging the earth and therefore creating a more violent and unpredictable weather pattern.

p.s. many students were very interested in your opinion on global warming...

It is a good idea for all of us to pay close attention to the data scientists are gathering. They have much more knowledge than any of us on whether or not the data gathered by all the scientists working on global warming significantly supports or contradicts the global warming hypothesis. We also need to know if the cause is human induced or a natural cycle. If it is human induced, then we all better get going on doing our part to reduce our carbon footprint. The good news is that I will bring to you the entire powerpoint Dr. Drake presented and you can see for yourselves what the data is and how scientists interpret it. For now I want you to pay very close attention to any articles in the paper or in the news so we can see if what the public is receiving as information is in line with the latest data. So please seek recent articles on global warming, bring them in to Mr. Watts or to me next Monday with you name and period # on them. Be sure to READ them! Then we can talk and compare.
