Getting Ready!
Welcome back from Thanksgiving vacation! I have been busy getting ready for my upcoming trip to Maryland. I am very excited, but know that I have a lot to do before I am ready to fly out of Portland on Saturday!
On my trip we will be studying the forest. In Maine we are very lucky to have an abundance of forested areas. One thing that always catches my attention as I drive around Maine is how the forests change from one area to the next. Yesterday I took some time to video my backyard as well as Grafton Notch State Park.
Watch the video below and then hypothesize why these two forests look so different. Post your hypothesis as a comment and make sure you explain your thinking!

I think that the forest near your house is different from the forest that you saw at Grafton notch because of the climate in the areas and the elevation. I think this because at my house on the ground we have mostly deciduous trees however as I climb up the mountain the trees begin to become more populated by evergreens
the video was cool and exciting i believe why the weather is diffent because the mt is higher up so the weather will be diffent and have a great trip mrs. macmillan
I think it's because since the pine trees are the base of a mountain, then they're considered the thick wood, and as you go up the mountain, there becomes less trees. In your back yard there is spruce trees, and I think that they grow at a low elevation, while pine trees grow at a high elevation.
I think they are different because different trees can only grow in certain places and can't grow in other places. An Ex. would be certain things can only grow in colder environments. While other ones can only grow in warmer environments.
I think what happened is the higher elevation is colder and gets more snow and the trees are different because of the elevation. The snow at your house probably melting faster than the snow up on the mountain is. It is colder up on the mountain.

Ms.Macmillan,
I think that the trees change from deciduous to evergreens because of the altitude change. I think this because deciduous trees can only survive with a certain amount of oxygen year round but evergreens tend to be able to live in harsher conditions.
i think it is from elevation
i think that the snow and forest is so diffrent from her house because she goes into the mountains wich has a highter elevation
I think why the two woods are different is because the two places have different elevations. I mean like one is in the mountains and the other is not. Have a good trip Mrs.Mac. We'll miss you!
i think this happened becouse of the differece of hight and becouse u guys might plow your yard also have a great trip to maryland O_o O_O >:( >:) ;) :)
Mrs. Macmillan,
I think that the reason why the two forest look different because that maybe one soil is richer than a the other one, or that since that it is higher up then the winds might be stronger and causing it not to have much more leave or maybe it is a different species of a tree.
I think that it depends on the climate, the soil density, whats in the soil, and the higher you travel, the more of one kind of tree you will see.
higher elevation
I think that the reason why there was all evergreens in one place and not the other is because of the climate sort of like if one is near a lake or a body of water or it it is more moist some where or like the temperature or what the area is near or surrounding.
i think thee trees are diffrent becuse of the climate and maybe one of them is on a hill
i think it is because there is less humans around so the snow can pile up instead of being plowed and the trees there were not cut down
i think that trees are different depending on the climate and temperature.
because it is 2 different places and one is your backyard and ones is the real forest and also because of how the land is used and another reason why is because bark trees don't grow there is because the land is not used of having those trees there. and your back yard is not used of having evergreen trees too.
I think that the trees are different on Grafton notch then at your house in your back yard because of the elevation. Also the climate change because you said that there was more snow on the notch then at your home too. have a great trip ms.Macmillan i love you !!:)
I think that the trees are different up on the mountain because its a different climate and different temperatures because the mountain is higher and more in the sky.
I think than the notches have more snow because the mountains are higher in the sky and the snow comes from the sky. And another reason that the notches have more of one type of tree is because it can survive in the different climates that are up in the notches!!!
I love you Mrs.Macmillan!!!!!
I think it is because of The hight is different in each spot. The trees are up higher and the whether is different in different elevation. Higher up the snow will collect more and it will be a different texture. This is because of the different temperatures. When the snow first comes down it will be thicker than when it gets to ground, so when it is higher it will also be less wet. So on the mountain it will be more dense than on ground level.
I think trees are different because the climate is different at Grafton notch. up at higher altitude.I think deciduous can withstand the climate and hight. But evergreens can not. Have an awesome trip mrs. macmillan
I think the trees are different because they are two different enviorments. The mountain had a lot more show and it was higher. These things can all affect the trees
I think that it depends on the soil and the kind of humidity in the air. The other thing is the water it gets .
Well i think the reason why the weather is different because like as you go higher up or at a difference the weather changes as in different places.
P.S. Have sweet trip!
I think that the forest has more snow because the trees don't let the sun shine through the trees so it don't melt.
I think that the trees were on different climate ranges, so there would be different type of trees that can grow. Evergreens would be able to grow in colder temperatures higher up on a mountain compared to the others.
I think that it is different because the mountain is higher up than your house. Sooo that is what I think.
I think that the forest in your backyard is different from Grafton notch because at your house you have like fern trees, evergreen trees and birch trees. And on the mountain there was a lot of pine trees in the center of the mounta so the weather is going to be way more colder up on the mountain because its high up and close to the sky. And in your back yard it not very high so its going to be a little warmer down there. I also
think that theres going to be more snow falling off the trees in both areas because thats really what happens when it starts to warm up from snowing the whole day and night. Have an awesome trip mrs. Macmillan i will miss you tons and i hope you figure out a bunch of interesting facts that you can share with us when you come back.
think it's because of the climate and the elevation for the two areas.
I think that the reason the forest are different is because your back yard is lower then the other grafton notch. Grafton notch gets more sunlight and heat and most of the rain.
i think it is different because one the elevation and 2nd of all they might be different because of the location.
I think it is because of the elevation and because of the harsh conditions, and the one by the road might have more wildlife in the forest by the road and it is close o the mountains.
I think the trees are different because of elevation.
I think it is because the different places have different elevations! Have a great time in Maryland Ms. Macmillan. We will all miss you!!!!!!!!! ;(
