I MADE IT !

High: 12°C
Low : 3°C

Sunset: 19:17
Hi Everyone - Well it was has been a VERY long day of travel. It all started very early Sunday morning. I was still getting packed at 2am. It was one of the most difficult trips to pack for because the weather is so uncertain. The airline will only accept two checked bags and together they can not exceed 70lbs. Well, when you start packing heavy boots, light boots, walking boots, and rubber boots it gets very heavy very fast. Needless to say I had to really condense. I was able to get all my stuff into one large bag that weighed 66.7 lbs. I was so excited until I started to zip up the bag and noticed the zipper was broken. WOW! Now I had to figure out a new plan. Long story short, I got it all into two smaller bags each weighing 45 pounds. So, I had 90lbs and a little over the limit. I got to the airport at 7:00am and guess what? They never even weighed them. They told me two bags to Canada are free. So after that everything went well, UNTIL I arrived at the customs counter in Winnipeg!! (I will explain that adventure when I get back.) While we were landing in Winnipeg the gentleman sitting next to me on the plane showed me a very large dike that surrounded the whole entire city of Winnipeg. He explained to me why it was there. That is your first research question. Why is there a dike that goes all around Winnipeg? Try to find out whatever you can and we will see if his story matches your research. The picture of Curious George and I was taken right before we left for Churchill. We arrived in Churchill

at around 5:00pm and the weather so far is sunny and around 40degrees. When we were landing in Churchill we could see a few Beluga Whales in the water. Very Cool! I met my entire team and everyone seems to be very nice and I think we are going to have a lot of fun. Once we arrived we were able to get our bags in our rooms and had a great dinner. After dinner we were told all the rules of the facility. The biggest rule is you can not go outside without another person or without asking one of the people who work here for permission. Yes, you guessed it, so you don’t get attacked by polar bears. The polar bear issue up here is very serious. If they get them around the research building it becomes a huge problem and a serious matter. Hopefully I get some good pictures of some. Well, tomorrow I will start the research and have more scientific material for you to look up. Read below for your assignment.
P.S. - I apologize for any grammar and/or spelling mistakes. We have some really long days and even now my eyes are slowly closing. The picture to the left is the churchill airport. A little smaller then Mitchell Field???

Students:
Look up dike and the question in bold above.
Define and explain the permafrost and what the active layer is.
Research what the Northern Churchill Studies Centre was prior to what it is today.(this is where I am staying)

The Curious George doll is a doll from Lincoln Elementary School in Cudahy. The third grade teacher lets people take the doll all around the world and asked it I would take it with me. He has even been to Paris. So you will all see George throughout my travels. He need memories too

I didn't mess up on the times guys!!! When it reads 19:20 that is military time. YOU need to convert that time. 19:20 is the same as 7:20pm. Come on!! Do some research on conversions.
