Time To Get Into The Field

High: 12 C
Low: 8 °C
Sunrise: 7:02
Sunset: 19:14

Hello All!! First of all look back at the last days blog comments. I have posted answers to some of your comments. Remember, the newest comment is always on the bottom. Look for my lovely picture on the comment to know it is from me. We have another beautiful day in Churchill. I am really lucking out with the weather. Many students commented me about what to do with your weather calendars while I am gone. Remember, you can use the information I post from Churchill or you can look it up while you are in the lab. I have so many comments and really enjoy hearing from you. Remember, I will not post anything that I don’t understand or not appropriate for the blog, OR about anyone else. Most kids are doing a great job. MANY of you said I need to come back soon!! Well, I guess that won’t happen anytime for awhile, but hang in there you will get through it. Today we received information about what we will study and how we will go about studying the information. Early in the morning we had lecture time, now I know how you guys feel listening to me go on and on when I lecture. haha. But, it was needed so we know what to do once we get to the field. I will be sending many photos. Some of them I will ask you to respond to and others you can just respond to them on your own in your journal. The first picture is of an anemometer. It is a digital one that reads a satellite. Erin and I were messing around with it this morning and it was able to tell us the barometric pressure, altitude, wind chill, and wind speed. It was so cool to work with it. What we are going to be looking at is the tree line at the edge of the forest tundra. This is where the forest ends and the tundra begins. What we should see is that the tree line is stable, not moving in or out. The idea is that if the vegetation is stable, then the climate is stable. The way we will do this is by studying different plots of vegetation. We will study the small vegetation, medium size bushes, and larger trees. The pictures are of some of the vegetation that grows around here. Remember, the growing season isn’t long so much of the vegetation is very small. Look at the tree behind the scientist Steve. That short little tree is about 20yrs old. Think about the size of a 20 year old tree in Wisconsin. WOW! We will also look at the layers of soil, bore some trees, and count many plants. Watch the short video. It is of Erin and she is looking through a clinometers. Write down in your journal what we are trying to figure out about the tree. It looks like Erin is taking a picture of it, but she isn’t. What is she doing? I had a video of me using the clinometer, but it didn't turn out that great. Sorry

videoCudahy Students: Make sure to look up the words in bold print. There are six of them. Don't forget to tell me what Erin is doing with Clinometer. Also, I would like you to research the different kinds of vegetation in and around the Churchill, Manitoba area. Look up what kinds of plants grow here. Also, find out how many of them you can eat!! Finally, see if you can find out anything about a plane crash. The picture is of the crash. Kind of cool to see, but kind of bad to have been on the plane. Let me know on your comments about the crash. Have FUN!!

Glad to hear everything is well. Wojo's #1 say hello. Keep the homework coming having fun looking up stories about planes and Canadian bacon. Don't know what kind of news you get, but Packers lost and Brewers hanging in at 1 game out. Would like to see my jacket, hat and under armour get some picture time. Also want to see a Polor Bear, so put some of that Canadian Bacon in someone's coat pocket while they are not looking. That way you can get some close ups. Take care Kevin.

I have no idea where the football came from because it was gym class and we were kicking the balls off the t's and i got hit on the side of the face. Not fun. Now I know the saying "Seeing stars"

From Ms. Schmitt's class:

What kind of animals have you seen?

How tall do you think that 20 year old tree will be in 20 more years?

Have you seen the Northern Lights?

Our guess for the clinometer...does it measure volume from one side of the tree to the other?

Mrs.Z's Class - We haven't seen any polar bears yet. Since the days have been a bit warmer then normal the bears tend to just lay around and sleep. If they move around they will get real warm. The greatest temp. diff. is about 10degrees. Today it was nice in the morning but then got cold and we got some hard rain. VERY WET. Thanks guys and keep me posted

Hey Joe - Yea, if we see a polar bear in the wild while in the field we have a person with a shot gun. She is our "Polar Bear Watch". Although, she stands around watching us work while holding a gun. I sometimes feel like a prisoner. :) Thanks and I will show a picture of her

Ms. Schmitt's Class - No, the clinometer measures the height of the object. Pretty cool. It calculates the change in the horizion. The only animals I have seen are some snow geese. There is a lot of open space and pleanty of room for them to hide. Also, on Sat. we have a off day and I plan to travel by tundra buggy to find that polar bear. Thanks and keep up the good work with your AWSOME teacher.

Yea once I was around that plane crash it was a bit creepy. Not everyday you see a plan crash. GOOD JOB on everyone that looked that up. Remember, I don't always know the answer it may just be information that someone at the center told us about. The plan is a few miles away from us. But remember, there is only like one road around churchill area.

Hi Mr. Wojo!

We are making text codes in our reading and we looked at your blog and thought WOW!!!! There is a lot of interesting information here! We couldn't look at it all so Mrs. Kaja is having us put the address in our assignment notebooks so we can log on at home as well!

Mrs. Cartwright came to help in our room and wonders: What will be done with the research data obtained from the trees?

Noah in our class knew about the adaptation that the ptarmigan makes without even looking it up!

We have lots of ???? ( also text coding we are doing in our reading)

Did you know that the ptarmigan is the state bird for Alaska??? The Willow ptarmigan- more info that Noelle in our class shared with us and the adults had to look it up!

Note our lesson in Text Coding- today our mini lesson was: When reading put post-it notes on the "text" about what you are thinking...?question !Wow P Predictions N New information S statement R reminds me (connection) Tonight students have an extra credit assignment for reading to read your blog and write one sentence for each of the text codes!!

Have a safe trip- Sorry we didn't have MORE time to dig into this!!

2. I read that Canadian Eskimo dogs are worth $1,800. I did not know that there was a Canadian eskimo dog.
