One week and I will be off to the Great North!! My journey will begin with me
leaving Milwaukee, Wisconsin and flying to Minneapolis, Minnesota. I will then fly to Winnipeg, Manitoba where it seems like I will meet many of my team members. We will board a plane in Winnipeg and fly into our final destination of Churchill, Manitoba. Churchill is a small community that is surrounded by three major biomes: The boreal forest to the south, the Arctic tundra to the northwest, and the Hudson Bay (Marine) to the north. We will then travel to Churchill Northern Studies Centre (CNSC) where we will be making our home base. CNSC was founded in 1976 and is an independent, non-profit research and education facility located 23km east of Churchill. Churchill is most famous for the many polar bears that move toward the shore from inland in autumn, which gives it the nickname “Polar Bear Capital of the World”. In autumn hundreds of polar bears wait on the vast peninsula until the water freezes on the Hudson Bay so they can return to hunt the ringed seals. Churchill is also known for the popular beluga whale which moves into the warmer waters of the Churchill River during July and August. The Aurora Borealis are also seen in late August and from December to late April in the night skies over Churchill. This is just the beginning of all the information I will be supplying you with while I am on my journey.
