23.5 Mile Per Hour Winds
Hello Everyone - I am getting a lot of questions that I can not answer because of lack of time. I apologize for that and if you keep track of the questions in your journal or continue to ask them, but I may have to answer them when I return. Well, today we did a lot more tree coring. Someone asked me how many trees we had to core. We had to core 50 trees in the tundra forest and 50 trees in the forest. Now remember, we had to take the DRC (diameter at root crown) core and the DCH (diameter at chest height) core. Therefore, we need 100 trees total with two cores from each tree. We did a lot of drilling. So, once we core these trees what can we learn from the cores? (“comment” me the answer) Another person asked what we use the straws for when coring trees. We use them to basically hold the core until we get back to the lab. The core fits right into the straw and we tape both ends and label them. Once we get back to the lab we lay them on a board to dry. Again, we have to label them a second time once on the board. Now you know why this is so time consuming. Students, this weekend I have off on Saturday. We get the whole day to ourselves to do whatever we want. We will be going on a Trails and Roads tour. We get to go down all the different trials that may lead us to the infamous polar bear. In the afternoon I think we are going to visit a museum. So, I will most likely not post a blog on Friday night or Saturday night. I will check it for anyone who whats to comment. Especially my "emergency" kids. (you know who you are, I will be back soon. Hang in there) What I will do is post lots and lots of pictures. I will mostly likely make a link to a website that has all my pictures on it. I know you guys/girls would love to look at pictures and not read a long blog. Today was a VERY windy day. Watch the video of Erin and you can get an idea of how windy it was. The wind got up to 23.5 miles per hour. When you watch the video it is really hard to hear because of the wind. Basically, in the video Erin is using the anemometer and I was asking her the wind speed and temperature. But the only thing you can hear is the wind. Once we got done with the tree coring we moved to the next data collection process of looking for seedlings and saplings.Let me know what you find out about the difference between a seedling and sapling. We basically crawl on our hands and knees and look for the specimen. Once we find them we make qualitative and quantitative observations about them. The method we are using is called destructive sampling. What I mean by this is that once we make our observations we remove the plant and bring it back to the lab. Then the scientists can make further observations and conclusions. Again we need 50 seedlings and 50 saplings in both the forest and forest tundra. We have to carry all the material back to the lab. So it comes to 100 seedlings and 100 saplings. Although, I have included a picture of the seedling so you can see its size. Ok, That is it for today cause you guys only have a half day. Have a good weekend and be safe. Oh yea, do me a favor. My roomate is Mr. Hoovey and he is kind of sad cause he isn't getting many comments from his students. Go on his page and show him some support from Cudahy!!! Thanks guys. CUDAHY STUDENTS: Look up bold words, answer questions above, comment Mr. Hoovey (he is from Buffalo, NY and loves Labman)
Hi Mr. Wojo. and Curious George! We didn't forget about you! It was a busy week preparing for Open House and you were a huge hit! Our class and the parents are so excited to continue hearing about your adventures that we sent the website address home with everyone! We are happy you are having a great time and love the pictures of the two of you together! Thanks for keeping us updated! (From: Curious George's Pals in Mrs. Dobke's & Mrs. Kandziora's Third Grade)
Mr. Wojo, My class was wondering if you were getting much exercise while you're gone. Sounds like you will on the trails on Saturday! Enjoy the day, and stay safe from the polar bears : ) Lynn
Maybe, you can learn if the tree is healthy or not, you can learn how old the tree is, and maybe you can just study the different parts on it. Mr. Wojo, I hope you're having fun, and I'm glad that you're going to come back soon. Say hi to everyone there form the CMS!
When you core trees you can learn how old it is, how much it is getting from the environment, how much it needs from the environment, and if the tree is healthy. Where is Mr. Hoovers blog? YAY! I didn't get hit by a football today! VICTORY lol
Hey mr. Wojo. I sent a comment to Mr. Hoovey. He seems pretty cool. Ask him if there are buffalo in Buffalo, NY. It sounds like you have been doing a lot of work. have fun, and you better find a polar bear tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tree coring is a way of learning something about trees without cutting them down. When we tree core, we look at tree rings to learn the age and growth rate of a tree.
hey mr wojo how r u? looks like uve had ALOT of trees to core! it a 1/2 day today so class is going by reaaly fast! i had a ? for u... do we still get to see u via satellite or not because they havent told us anything here! plz comment back nour
Hey... I think that you should start lettin Mr. Hoovey sleep! lol I am finished with your homework. Have fun, and I hope that you see a polar bear soon! Don't forget your camera! -micaela :)
heyy!!!!!! just wanted to say hi and that theres alot of tools you use i probably dont even know how to use any besides a ruler bye!!! hope its not too cold up there!!!!! AMBER JELINSKI!!!!:)

Hey Mr Wojo, I posted a comment on Cari Carlson's blog page and i asked her what she was doing on the trip, and if she was studying about vegitation and whatnot like you. She said she was but from a different point of view, she also said that your "team" is called "point/center/quarter" and i was wondering why it is named that. well i'll ttyl. I got a football game tomarro! Go Bulldogs!!! :)
Wojo, The anwser to your question is that your core trees to find out how old the tree is and who the weather was like when the certain ring was grown by the width, shape, and color.
Wow, I got done with my questions really early, I just hope I got all of them right... D= ...with all the false information on computers. But luckily I'm still keeping myself busy so I don't have to do the packet.
Hey Mr. Wojo. I have a few questions I need to ask you. 1: What time do you go to bed? 2: What did you eat for breakfast? 3: Why do you love polar bears? 4: DID YOU TRY ANY CANADIAN BACON YET!!!!! from, Matt P.S The bacon looks more like fried ham.
It being we are not your students, we wanted to keep comments to a minimum, as you have so many to go through, but wanted you to know we've been following your journey. It most certainly seems as if you are having the time of your life--you are learning a lot and so are your students! What an AWESOME opportunity for EVERYONE! We are sure you can't wait until you come home, though. The weather here has been nothing short of beautiful--not even chilly, except for a little bit at night. Kids are still wearing shorts to school! :) Anyway, enjoy the rest of your stay. We will continue to follow your blog. The pictures and videos are just great. Thanks for all you are doing!
mrwojo for the seedlings and saplings question here is the awnser: saplings- a small baby tree seedlings- a seed that is starting to come out but not yet grown (im not sure of these are right) nour
Hi this is Dominick, since my dad won't give u any hw over the weekend I have a few words you can look up. maybe he'll give u extra credit. Im in Mrs Kaja's 3rd grade class and this is what we are studying.1. What are the 4 parts of a plant??? 2. What is an ecosystem? 3. Habitat?? 4. Decomposers?? 5. Consumers?? 6. Community?? and 7. Name 4 ecosystems. Have fun!!! Love you daddy. dominick:):) have fun on your day off.
dad, we had our quiz on habitat sand i go 8 out of 8. then we had a quiz on living things and i got 11 out of 16. we had a math test today too. this year is hard. dominick
Mr. Wojo here is what i learned about what you can learn from coring trees:
Each year's growth is represented by the combination of a light (early wood) and dark (late wood) ring. Tree growth begins relatively rapidly in the spring, resulting in the light colored early wood; dark colored late wood results as growth decreases later in the year. The most common information obtained from tree cores is tree age and rate of growth. Forest managers often use these data for decision-making. Decreased growth rates, evident by narrower growth rings, indicate reduced vigor resulting from environmental factors such as overcrowding, pest damage or drought. Informed decisions on when and how to harvest timber or to conduct other forest improvement operations may be made using tree rings as an indicator of management needs.
Other information such as wood quality, past climatic conditions, as well as past fire frequency also may be determined. Wood quality is assessed by measuring the bulk density of the core. Bulk density simply is the weight of a set volume of wood. Higher bulk densities generally indicate increased strength properties. The most specialized use of tree cores is dendrochronology, which is the dating of past events, such as drought and wildfire, through the study of tree ring growth. Historic climatic conditions may be indicated by the percentages of early to late wood. Poor growing conditions are indicated by narrow growth rings and a greater percentage of late wood.
1. What are the 4 parts of a plant??? Root, stem, flower, leaf. 2. What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is the way everything that lives helps balance out everything else that lives. 3. Habitat?? A habitat is where something or someone lives. 4. Decomposers?? A bacteria or fungus that breaks down and feeds on other organisms. 5. Consumers?? Something that consumes other things. 6. Community?? See above ecosystem they are closely related 7. Name 4 ecosystems. Can't answer that one, I went to a different school in a different state so I learned about different things.
Hope it helps Dominick! ~Danielle
P.S. Mr. Wojo, my count is now even lower, I got hit with a soft ball when I took Crush for a walk Now I am thinking I just don't pay too much attention.

ps still jooking for what i can learn from from the core.
hey mr. wojo today is a half day whoooohoooooo

from a tree core you can find the age, historic climate changes, if theres been a poor growing year, if theres been droughts or widfires.
so thats that have a good weekend!!!

Hay Mr. Wojo you told us to find out the diffrence of seedlings and saplings. well here's what I got out of it.
♥Seedlings♥ Basically is a growing baby tree.
♥Saplings♥ is a young tree.
so the diffrence is that a seedling is a growing tree and a sapling is a young tree.
