Caring for Coral

Traveling to San Salvador, Bahamas will fulfill my dream of volunteering to help our planet. My experiences will give me rich, important material to bring back and include in my curriculum for my students. I will be helping John Rollino conduct research on coral reef ecology and coral diseases, most specifically, coral bleaching. I have the opportunity to actually participate in a study that will add to the knowledge of how Earth's climate changes are impacting the inhabitants of our oceans!

What reef are you doing your research on?
Student from Mrs. Emersons c lass.
im in Mrs. Emersons class and whats your favorite thing about your job?
im in Mrs.Emerson's class and my question is whats the scariest thing that had ever happend to you while you were in the ocean helping reefs?
Hi! I'm in Mrs.Emersons class.I have 2 questions. Why are coral reefs important to humans? Why are there diffrent shades of blue in the ocean?
We are researching at collecting data at 3 reef sites in San Salvador: Rice Bay, Rocky Point and Lindsay's Reef.
My favorite aspect about my "job" down here, is knowing that I am helping with an expedition that will create healthier reefs and educate people on reef health.
Not seeing responses to comments to you, Kristina, is making me think you are incredibly busy learning, exploring, researching, having fun. Cool! Coral reef, exotic plants, tropical fish. Is the water calm, have you enjoyed a beautiful sunset, have you seen a sunken wreck, have you seen a sting ray, fish displaying blue, purple, yellow, orange, white, green? I'm confident your comfort level is increasing, you're developing expertise in the marine world. Stay positive, keep your ears and eyes open! Love, Dad
Goodmorning my Diving, Snorkling Bird,
From all of your blogs that I am enjoying, it sounds as though you are really learning LOTS!
Thanks for sharing it all. I hope you are having some quiet times to journal. It will be good to talk to you about everything when you return home. I am wondering what the percentage of dead coral is to the live coral you see ?
Hugs, Mom
Hi Kris
What a great opportunity for you and your students! I'll be watching and reading. Have a fantastic time!

hi Mrs.W, Hows it going? We just got back from water testing. I did a site survey at Woodland creek. Have you tried any new foods?
Best Wishes,
Alexus
Hi Mom! Yes, I am learning so much! I could not get a percentage of live to dead coral as it is hard to document dead coral because when coral dies, it tends to break from the reefs and wash up on shores. I did however find out that currently 6 or 7% of the reefs are covered in hard coral, whereas 15 years ago 12 - 14% of the reefs were covered in hard coral. That is a quite a change huh?
Love you!
Hello Alexus! I am so happy that Mrs. Poole is having you do such cool things in science this year. She is a pretty wonderful teacher huh? I have tried some new foods. Yesterday we had a traditional Bahamian meal of mutton snapper, rice & pigeon peas, trigger fish & macaroni and cheese. For dessert, we had guava duff (like a cake made with fresh guava) covered in a guava butter sauce. It was a very tasty meal!
Hi Dad! Yes, we are very busy! I have received all of your comments, though because of the internet connection here, I have to be very selective with what I post! In answer to your questions, the water was pretty calm up until yesterday when a storm moved in. We had heavy rain, wind, lightning, & thunder and as you know, this caused white caps! We did not go into the water today to do research, but did do water samples in the lab and did a beach clean-up. Look for a blog tomorrow on the clean-up; it was eye-opening! I have enjoyed beautiful sunrises and sunsets! I have seen a smaller Southern Sting Ray and a very large on too! It was super cool.
Have you been able to see my daily blogs? I am asking because I noticed you commented to the very first one I left and not the most recent one. Love you!
