End of Trapping

Dear Students,
Today we collected our traps and ended the trapping season. The researchers won't trap mice and voles in the winter because they are not active and many of themn die , especially if they have not saved enough food for the cold months.
We also collected the camera traps and tomorrow we will check to see if we caught any animals on camera.
On Monday I will answer all your questions. We will also talk about the blog and discuss the postings. I have a lot of work for yoiu to do!
I miss you all and I look forward to seeing you soon.
Ms. Sari

Marine Mammals

One of the members of our team took this picture 2 wseeks ago on the coast of Nova Scotia. What is it? Is it a mammalk? Why does this giant creature prefer to live here in the cold North Atlantic?

Up a Tree

Guess why I am in the tree!
Here are five possible answers:
a) escaping from a moose
b) looking for scat
c) setting vole traps
d) setting a camera trap
e) trying to locate the rest of the group
Let me know what you think I'm doing and why I'm doing it!

Vole Molting

Look at this vole we caught today. What is happening to his fur? (Think about what time of year it is now)

Your questions!

Good morning Students!
Thank you for the comments. The comments about "lost" were very funny!Idelisse had the right idea... but I was only lost for 30 minutes and cell phones don't work here. Also, there are no trails and no maps...
Many of you asked about the tree with roots growing over the rock... In the past the rock had soil on it and the tree roots grew down in the soil. But many people hiking climbed on the rock to take pictures, and all the soil came off, so now it looks so strange...
The soil here is thin and delicate.
I have a question for you... look at the trees around this house here. They are losing their leaves earlier than the trees in New York. And the weather here is colder? Whyt is that? How can you explain it???
But today was sunny, we were warm and took off our jackets. We checked our traps and caught lots more voles, and one mouse. They are very cute and soft...

Adaptations

These two pictures show the same animal. It's called a snowshoe hare.
In the spring and summer it's brown, and in winter it turns white.
How does changing color halp the hare survive?
There are lots of these hares here! And the coyotes and bobcats and foxes love to hunt and eat them!
Now the world is experiencing climate change - the weather is changing in many places. Here in Nova Scotia last year there was no snow until March. So all winter the hare was white but the ground was not white. In March the hare turned brown, but then it snowed!
How will the changes in weather affect the hare's ability to survive??
