Climate Change at the Arctic's Edge with Ms. Santoro

Hello! Welcome to my blog. I recently traveled to Churchill, Canada to work with scientists studying the impact of climate change. They are trying to learn more about our planet in order to help us take care of it. Please join me in helping children learn about the ways that people all over the world take care of our planet. Write in now. Look for one of the blue "comments" words. Click on it and leave me a message about how you REDUCE, REUSE or RECYCLE.

Challenge #2 IMPORTANT: Read all posts below this first.

My trip is less than a month away!  I have to take a plane to get there and am looking forward to the flight.  On September 21st I will fly out of Bradley Airport in Windsor Locks, CT.  I will have to change planes two times.  My route will include stops and plane changes at
Chicago, Illinois
Winnepeg, Manitoba
then I finally land in Churchill, Manitoba.

I have posted two different challenges this time.   I posted a challenge for younger students and another one for older students.  Students of any age are welcome to answer these challenges.  Parents and teachers can always help out.

CHALLENGE FOR GRADES K+

Find Churchill, Manitoba on a map  http://www.churchill.ca/about/location/

Figure out if I will be going North or South.  Try to figure out if it will be hotter or colder than Connecticut in Churchill.  HINT:  The closer you get to the North Pole, the colder it gets.  The closer you get to the Equator, the warmer it gets.

I will be outside for a few hours each day.   I might be digging in the dirt, collecting plants or observing plants and animals.

In the comments section of this blog I'd like you to write one or two items that you think I should take on my trip.   Here is another website that might help you:  Churchill Photos

Include a sentence telling why you think I would need this item.  Your parents can help you type it in the computer.  HINT:  Everything has to fit in a suitcase.  Example:  I can't take my bike, but I can take sneakers.

CHALLENGE FOR GRADES 3+

For your next challenge I want you to find out
  1. how many miles it is from the airport in Connecticut to the airport in Churchill, Manitoba
  2. how long it will take me to fly there.

A good place to start is on this website  http://maps.yahoo.com/

If you put in the address of the airport 64 Ella Grasso Tpke, Windsor Locks, CT and
(any number) Main Street, Churchill, Manitoba, Canada
you will get an idea of how many miles I'll have to fly and how many hours it would take to drive a car there.

HINT:  When you try to figure out how long it will take me to fly there you need to know that my plane will be going about 550 miles per hour.  Also, you'll need to add in 5 extra hours for take offs, landings and layovers (layovers are times that you have to wait for your next plane to arrive).

FOR EVERYONE:

Please feel free to ask me questions or write comments at any time.  When you write in the comments section don't forget to include your name, age or grade, and city or town.  If you live outside of the USA be sure to include your country too.  Last - make sure you don't look at the comments until you've answered the math questions.  I might have already posted some correct answers.

Have fun!
