Climate Change at the Arctic's Edge with Ms. Santoro

Hello! Welcome to my blog. I recently traveled to Churchill, Canada to work with scientists studying the impact of climate change. They are trying to learn more about our planet in order to help us take care of it. Please join me in helping children learn about the ways that people all over the world take care of our planet. Write in now. Look for one of the blue "comments" words. Click on it and leave me a message about how you REDUCE, REUSE or RECYCLE.

Soil Search

video Wow!  Look at what I found!  Click on the triangle to view the movie that shows me digging in the soil at my school.  Then write to me to tell me what you find!  I'd love to know if someone can identify the living things I found.  :  )

Excellent! Worms are so much fun to find. They are easy to look at closely because you can easily pick them up and hold them in your hand. It is usually safe to hold them in your hands since they don't bite. It is always great to check with an adult first though, just in case you have allergies.

I am wondering what other creatures you found! Lots of students know that I LOVE insects. I wonder if you found some insects, or maybe you found some plants. I'm so glad you wrote about your soil Sarah. Let us know if you identify any of the living things.

Mandaline,

I hope you had as much fun digging in the soil as I did! You found some very interesting things. Do you think I'll find the same things in the Canadian soil? I'll let you know if I do!

I dug in my backyard near the Wood Pond area. I found lots of roots! In fact, I found one huge tree trunk root. I found dirt, of course. I also found many small rocks.

I wonder if you will find roots in Churchill, Manitoba, especially, roots that are similar to the big root I found in Glastonbury, CT.

Miss S,

Today we went outside with our class to dig in the soil! The children in Mrs. M's class and Mrs. S's class went out together and this is what we discovered. Group A found ants. Group B found grubs and a black beetle. Group C found ants, rocks, tiny bugs, and roots. Group D found a dragonfly around the soil, grubs, a black beetle, and rocks. Group E found an earthworm, two grubs, and a tiny spider. Group F found rocks with silver on it and tiny spiders. Group G found two black bugs, tiny rocks, and ants moving an egg. We had a lot of fun digging in the soil.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.

I'm so glad you all had fun digging in the soil! Today was our first day digging soil and collecting real data. What we found on top of the soil was very different from the plants you would see in Connecticut. What we found beneath the soil was a bit more familiar. We found roots, soil that was made up of decayed plants and minerals (rocks, sand and silt) and even ants! We didn't find any worms or permafrost. We kept hitting rocks and couldn't dig far enough down to get to the permafrost.

Thank you all for writing in.

We had a hard time digging because our soil was so dry. So we looked on the surface of the soil, and we found crickets, cockroaches, centipedes, roots, spiders, love bugs, twigs, ants, wasps, and rocks. Our soil is also red!
