Climate Change at the Arctic's Edge with Ms. Santoro

Hello! Welcome to my blog. I recently traveled to Churchill, Canada to work with scientists studying the impact of climate change. They are trying to learn more about our planet in order to help us take care of it. Please join me in helping children learn about the ways that people all over the world take care of our planet. Write in now. Look for one of the blue "comments" words. Click on it and leave me a message about how you REDUCE, REUSE or RECYCLE.

I would like to name the polar bear "Poley".
You might see it someplace else, but I like Poley the Polar Bear for its name. Teresa, 4, N.Kingstown, RI

Teresa,

What a great name! I am going to let some other children pick some names and then I'll let my students vote. Ask Mom or Dad what voting means. Maybe you can vote on what to have for dinner some night.

If no other students choose a name then I will definitely use "Poley."

I'm so glad you and Mom wrote to me, and I hope you write again soon!

Great idea Peter! So far we have two names, Poley and Freezer. I'll keep taking names until Friday and then I'll have students vote on their favorite.

Hi Miss Santoro. I suggest naming the adorable polar bear "Snowy" or "Snowball" because he looks like he is covered in snow.

Dear Ms. Santoro (known to some as Auntie Linda),

I think you should name your polar bear "Nanook" because that is what the Inuit call polar bears. Or you should call it "Constantine John Phipps" who was the first to describe the Polar bear as a distinct species. You could even call him/her "Doctor/Scientist Freezy Bear". Snowy
Snowball
Nanook
Constantine John Phipps
Doctor/Scientist Freezy Bear
and
Funny Face

I'll keep adding names to the list until the end of Friday. Then I'll give students a chance to vote on the names all through the weekend and Monday. We'll see which name is chosen by the most children by Monday night and I'll tell you the name on Tuesday!

Hi Miss Santoro,
We have brainstormed a list of names for your polar bear friend. The names that we thought of are:
Crystal - because there are ice crystals around the arctic.
Cubby - because it's a bear cub.
Hunter - largest land preditor and likes to hunt seals.
Frosty - it is frosty where the bears live.
Ice Block/Cube - because there is a lot of ice in the arctic.

We hope that you are having a wonderful trip!

I think all of the names are terrific. My favorite would be Doctor Poley. Regardless of the name that is chosen, however, I think the name should still have "Doctor" in front of it - like "Doctor Freezer" or "Doctor Snowy."

Good luck to both of you on your journey, Miss Santoro. I look forward to reading about your adventures on this blog.
