Climate Change at the Arctic's Edge with Ms. Santoro

Hello! Welcome to my blog. I recently traveled to Churchill, Canada to work with scientists studying the impact of climate change. They are trying to learn more about our planet in order to help us take care of it. Please join me in helping children learn about the ways that people all over the world take care of our planet. Write in now. Look for one of the blue "comments" words. Click on it and leave me a message about how you REDUCE, REUSE or RECYCLE.

Way to go Peter! Yes, there are many polar bears that make their homes around Churchill in the summer and go out onto the ice in the winter. The polar bears will still be on land when I'm up there, so I might see one.

Keep up the great work!

Miss Santoro,
In Churchill, what time does the sun go down?

Great question John!

Churchill will have 12 hours and 21 minutes of daylight on September 21, the day I leave. Connecticut will have about 12 hours and 12 minutes of daylight on the same day. At that time of the year it is almost the same.

If you went in June it would be a different story. Churchill can get more than 18 hours of sunlight and Connecticut would only get a little above 15 hours!

To see a graph with the sunrise and sunset times in Churchill you can go to:

https://people.creighton.edu/~shu02225/churchill_weather.html#daylight

You can compare that to the sunrise and sunset in Glastonbury, CT during different times of the year at this site:

ALWAYS BE SURE THAT YOUR PARENTS CHECK EVERY WEBSITE FIRST TO MAKE SURE IT IS STILL GOOD FOR CHILDREN. Some web sites can change.

And always be sure to have FUN!

Thanks for writing your question!

I'll post this information in my next blog.

Sarah,

Bravo! Churchill IS famous for polar bears and whales. I don't know if I'll get to see them, but it is exciting to know that they are there. I am also very excited to see what kinds of tools the scientists are using up in Churchill and I'll be sure to take as many pictures as I can!
