Honey island Swamp and Gators!!

We woke up bright and early at 5:45 AM when the station biologist came in to get coffee. The bunkhouse that we are staying in is actually his office. Over breakfast Rebecca Hazen, our field team leader, told us all about the types of caterpillars we were going to find and how to recognize them. We learned quite a bit about their anatomy. Caterpillars are a type of insect and have the basic anatomy of an insect. Then we drove to Honey Island Swamp to begin collecting. The first thing we saw were lots!! of very large spiders on the side of the road. Their webs were beautiful. The next thing we say was an alligator in the water by a bridge. We all stopped and had a photo shoot. Hunting for the caterpillars was hard. They are not as easy to find as spiders, butterflies and lizards. I found a couple of anoles like the kind that are in Mr. Lehman’s room. We also found a very cool walking stick. After hunting along the side of the road, we went into the bottomland hardwood forest using a machete to cut the underbrush. We tied orange tape around a large water oak and created an X with each arm being 5 m. We used that to create a sample area with a diameter of 10m. We then collected every caterpillar we could find in that area. We put them into Ziploc bags with lots of leaves from their host plant. Then we had to determine the types of plants were in the area, how many leaves they had and what percentage of leaves had been chewed by caterpillars. It was very hot and tiring work and we ended up not finishing until after 3:00 PM. We then came back to the bunkhouse for lunch.
To answer one question from last week: The question was:”What is the difference between prologs and true legs?” True legs have muscles attached to them and are the legs that will become the legs of the moth or butterfly. Prolegs, don’t have any muscles and stay stiff by hydrostatic pressure. The caterpillar’s body pumps fluid into the legs to keep them hard like the true legs.
To answer one question from Monday: The question was: “Are certain trees poisonous to caterpillars?” The answer is yes! Some caterpillars can only eat the leaves of one type of tree and any others would be poisonous to it. Other caterpillars can eat many different types of trees or other plants.

Look at the new pictures for Monday. I finally got them to upload!

Now here are some questions from our morning anatomy lesson for you to answer. When you answer them please use correct spelling, not IM language.
1. What are the basic characteristics of insects and how do caterpillars show them?
2. Caterpillars have spiracles along their sides. What are they?
3. Do caterpillars have blood like us? Explain
4. Do caterpillars have skeletons like us? Explain

Hi Mrs Rodriquez. Miss you. I just read your blog. Our caterpillars are doing great. From table 3-5, our caterpillars are eating the liner. Should they be doing that? The question, do caterpillars have blood, the answer is yes. Everything needs blood to live. If they don't have blood they die. Have a great time and bee safe.

Hey Mrs. Rodriquez,
Here are some answers to the questions.1. Insects have no backbone and no invertibrates. Also, they have wings. the insects have an exoskeleton
2. Spiracles are paired lateral openings on each segment of the thorax and abdomen. These lead from the exterior into the respiratory system of insects. The respiratory system has elastic air tubes, called tracheae, throughout the body.
3.They do have blood. Insects do not have veins or arteries like humans, but they have open circulutory systems.
4. Insects do have a sekelton but an exoskeleton. it provides support for the animals contents and muscels. Also, it is protection of water loss. This means that they do not have skeletons like humans.

At September 24, 2008 9:07 AM , Anonymous Catrina P and Codi B said...

1.What are the basic characteristics of insects and how to show them?

-Insects have what we call an exoskeleton or a hard, shell-like covering on the outside of its body.
-Insects have three main body parts: head, thorax, and abdomen.
-Insects have a pair of antennae on top of their heads.
-Insects have three pairs of legs. They use the legs for walking, but sometimes an insect may have a pair of legs that are specially designed for jumping.
-Insects have two pairs of wings.

2. Caterpillars have spiracles along their sides. What are they?

The caterpillar breathes through holes in its side called spiracles.

3. Do caterpillars have blood like us? Explain

They move through contraction of the muscles in the rear segments pushing the blood forward into the front segments elongating the torso.

4.Do caterpillars have skeletons?

No because they are invertebrate

Caterpillars have three main body segments. Caterpillars do have blood, and when they move, it pushes the blood into the front segment, lengthening the segment. Spiracles are what the little caterpillars use to breathe! A caterpillar has no skeleton, but an exoskeleton. Did you know, that a caterpillar called the Buckmoth Caterpillar stings people. Weird.

A CATERPILLAR DOESN'T HAVE ALL THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN INSECT!!
#2-A caterpillar breathes through holes in it's side called spiracles
#3-The blood in insects is usually not red however but it usually is yellowish. insects blood is different from people blood and other animals blood in one other way—it flows around inside the body cavity with out being inside veins or arteries, although insects do have a pumping tube shaped heart to help move it around. Insects have an “open circulatory system.”
#4-Caterpillars have exoskeletons. This means they have kind of an outer skeleton. As the caterpillar grows the exoskeleton will get tighter. The caterpilllar will molt it’s exoskeleton and grow a new one.

Humans and insects do not have the same skeleton. Insects have an invertebrate that means they do not have a backbone but humans have a vertebrate which means you do have a backbone. Insects are soft and bendy so they need a hard shell to live in.
Insects do not have the same blood as humans. We have red blood that carries the oxygen through our body. Insects have a whole complex system of air tubes that let the air oxygen out. Their blood carries nutrients throughout the body but if the insects get themselves hurt they do start to bleed. Their blood clots so they can recover from minor injuries.
The caterpillar has three parts of the body the head, thorax, and abdomen. The caterpillar spends most of his time eating. Caterpillars come in many different colors and shapes. Caterpillars molt four or five times before cocoon and when they molt they have new soft skin.
Spiracles are part of a caterpillar’s body that helps it to be able to breathe. It is part of the respiratory system. Spiracles let the oxygen go to the outside through a complex system of air tubes.

I'm happy your trip is going well. Caterpillar anatomy is similar to insects in that they have three body parts: a head, thorax, and abdomen. Spiracles are the insects' breathig breathing pores. The answer to what are caterpillars spiracles is, spiracles are tiny holes along the side of the caterpillars body that allow it to breathe. Caterpillars like many other insect have larvae they do not have a exoskeleton however they have more legs than most insects. Caterpillars do have blood they bleed when their exoskeleton breaks. Two different sources are saying different things about the skellaton. One source says that they have no skellaton and one says that they do have an outer skellaton. From Ariana and Kaeley V

Hi Mrs. Rodriguez
1. There are 5 basic characteristics of an insects:
Insects have an exoskeleton, a hard, shell-like covering on the outside of its body.
They have three main body parts: head, thorax, and abdomen.
They have a pair of antennae on top of their heads.
They have three pairs of legs.
They have two pairs of wings.

Caterpillars show these characteristics because they have antennae, they have the 3 main body parts, and they 2 pairs of legs.

2. Spiracles are breathing holes. The spiracles are connected to the air tubes and allow the insect to exchange gases. The insect can open or close the spiracles by contracting muscles along its side.

3.Caterpillars blood is only about 10% blood cells; most of the cells is mostly watery plasma. The insects circulation system does not carry oxygen so the blood does not have red blood cells as our does. The cells are usually green or yellow in color.

4. They have an exoskeleton, a hard outer covering.

Caterpillars resemble the plants they eat off of.
Caterpillars cause a lot of damage to the earth by eating most of the leaves.
Caterpillars do not have blood like us because they have something called a circulatory system.
