Hello! I teach 7th grade World Geography, 8th grade History and Environmental Studies at St. Michael/Albertville Middle School in Minnesota. Starting mid-April I’m heading to Nova Scotia to work along side scientists studying the effects of climate change on the mammals of the area. Read below to catch-up on all of my adventures and participate in the challenges!

WOW! Today was an exciting and tiring day. We checked our traps to see how many mice and vole we caught first thing in the morning. (Watch the video below to see how many I caught and how we get them out!!) Then we had lunch and took a scat test. GROSS I know, but scientists use scat as a primary tool to help them learn more about animals. Before we start our research with scat Dr. Christina and Dr. Chris needed to see if we did a good job identifying it. Don’t worry, I passed!
After the test we spent a couple of hours clearing a trail in the forest to be used for other expeditions. 5 of us girls cleared about 80 meters in 2 hours… which maybe doesn’t seem like a lot now, but take a look at how strong I think I am.
After clearing the trails we went back to check our traps for the second time today, unfortunately I didn’t have any in mine this time, but fingers crossed for tomorrow!!
Mr. Olson said you are doing a great job on your projects! Keep up the great work and good luck on your MCA’s!!!

Challenge:
1. Name 4 reasons why you think scientists use scat as a primary tool for their research on animals?

Ms. Messick,

This is Mr. J's 5th hour class and we want to know if the small mammals that you are holding could possibly carry rabies? does that make you nervous to hold a wild mouse?

Thanks
