Swimming with Polar Bears

We had a great day off, exploring this region with the help of our gun toting guide Sheldon. He gave us a great cultural and natural history tour taking a bus to places most buses shouldn't go. We saw a Red Fox, an Arctic Fox, several Arctic Hares, a flock of Snow Geese, a few Grey Jays, hundreds of Canadian Eskimo Dogs and two Polar Bears. Labman went swimming in The Hudson Bay.....temperature.......close to freezing.

The Inuit culture has been part of this challenging environment for thousands of years and has coexisted in this ecosystem. They have learned to live sustainably off the land and continue to share their traditions. I have been lucky to be part of it.

Tomorrow, I will answer your questions concerning the vegetation, permafrost, the Northern Lights and Mr. Wojo. We started a second site and will repeat the same procedure we did at The Rocket Lake site.

LabMan-

Do Polar bears generally swim in the open ocean?
Who could swim faster- Lab Man or a Polar Bear? (and... how fast can Polar Bears swim)

Did Labman freeze? Or was he wearing a wet suit? Please tell him I think he is crazy to swim in near freezing water!

I love the "stop" poler bear alert sign, haha :) I'm sorry I haven't been blogging lately, I was in the hospital from MOnday until Thursday- I just got back to school as of recent. But I've read your blog and it looks like you're having an amazing time :D
I'll post a better comment soon, on more then just this post. As soon as I get home, so I won't be on this lame slow computer.

Stay warm!

Mr. Hovey let me start off by saying that i attended your live webcast and got a lot off unanswered questions answered. But what i would like 2 know is if you were able 2 study a little bit of the life styles of the polar bears and other animals you saw.

Mr. Hover, aka Lab Man:

My dear duaghter, Gabrielle Grace would like to know what you eat and where you sleep?

My darling Jack would like to know how you found the polar bears?

You are brave and we are so proud of you!

What an incredible and educational time you are having. I was also at the live webcast on Friday...how cool was that? What type of interactions have you had with the Inuit people, and what have you learned from their ability to co-exist with the nature that is up there, as well as the land to live off of?
