I am coming home tomorrow!!!!! I will miss Churchill, the people and the research , but am looking forward to seeing all of you. A polar bear tried to make me stay. It got in the first hit, but I countered with a roundhouse kick Chuck Norris would be proud of.
Today, we cored more trees at the second site. But we also got to stand on permafrost! We dug a hole and hit frozen ground at about 65 cm. It was pretty cool (it was frozen). We dug through a rich organic(very black -some stuff still decomposing) layer where we found sand and then pebbles. It turns out this location was where the lake shore used to be (1000's of years ago). A few centimeters into the gravel layer we hit frozen ground. Fresh groundwater seeped quickly through the gravel layer and filled the bottom of the hole, the ice acting as a boundary.

I'm looking forward to hearing about some conclusions from your research. I'd like to know more about the effects of global warming on these delicate biomes. How can we continue to follow Dr. Kershaw's study?
This has been an excellent adventure for us. Thank you.
Glad to see that the polar bear didn't have you for lunch. Have you become a hoser yet since you spent so much time in Canada?
Hey Hovey,
That is great that you are coming home. I really hope you had fun and you enjoyed your self. Make sure you bring pictures of what you seen. I hope you did not beat that bear up to bad! Well cant wait to see you.

I really enjoy this vicarious trip. I seems like a lot of fun. This is a great accomplishment. Im proud of you Hovey. I hear you've been eating quite a bit. Don't come back too fat. whisper...( U wont be able to fit your LABMAN suit!!!!)
Yeah, I hear those polar bears get really attatched to their food up there... :)
How far down do you think the ground is frozen? Was it defrosting more then it has been? Wasn't the permafrist one of the main reasons you went up there? To test it and whatnot, seeing if methane gas is being released?
ARE WE ALL GOING TO DIE?????
Haha, can't wait to see you soon Hovey. I'm finally back in school, after some prolonged absense. What day are you coming back to school?
Adam,
Did you ever find out what the water temp. was in the Hudson the day you went in?
Hope your trip home went smoothly.
Take care and keep in touch.
Linda S. (and Dr. Foo Foo)
