Where In The World Is Christopher Columbus?

Early Triangular Sails


Christopher Columbus did not fall off the edge of the world like his sailors thought he would. This was because the world was not flat like Ptolemy's map. The other reason was the development of the triangular sail like the Fore Sail on Christopher's ship. Search the link above and find out what the name of this three sided sail is called and who used it first.

This may be a map that Christopher Columbus used to plan his trip. Ptolomy drew it early in the 2nd century, but it was still believed to be the most current view 1200 years later when a German printer named Leinhart Holle printed it on his press in 1482.
