I think that caterpillars (especially the Painted Lady) are incredibly interesting! It's very hard to choose just one fascinating fact. I really can't believe that caterpillars have around 4,000 muscles in their small bodies! That's pretty shocking when you think about the fact that humans don't even have half that amount. Wow!

I think that is pretty fascinating also!

Now let me answer your qestion.
I think it is pretty cool one how fast they grow compared to Monarchs.

I think that is intresting to. and I did'ent know that they had 12 eyes thats weird.we have a painted lady caterpillars in a pupa in our class.

I think that the most fantastic thing is that the butterfly can only live for 2 weeks but not all of them.

I think the most fascinating fact about butterflies that we have learned is how butterflies got their name. Butterflies got their name because in New England there was a butterfly that looked like butter,so people in New England started calling the spieces butterflies and then the name spread all around the world.

The most fascinating fact is when caterpillars come out as a butterfly they only last up to two weeks. It makes me sad.

I thought that watching the caterpillers getting into their chrysalis was interesting. I can NOT wait until they are butterflies. Especially I can't wait to see Painted Ladies in real life!

The most amazing fact I learned in this unit was that a caterpiller has 4,000 muscles in it's tiny body. That is just about 4 times as much our's! I really think caterpillers are interesting.

I like the fact of how the Butterfly got it's name because the Brimstone Butterfly's in England are the color of butter so they called them Butterfly. Then the word spread around the world and that's how they got there name.

Caterpillars are insects and they have 16 legs. They have prolegs and true legs. Before they go in their chrysalis they make a silk button. I wonder how long our caterpillars will be in there for?

I am amazed that caterpillars have 4,000 muscles too. I would never think that there would be that many in one caterpillar. I have a caterpillar, its already in its chrysalis. I bet soon it will be a butterfly.

I think that the caterpillars are the most fascinating thing in our science unit. My caterpillar was a baby for a long time, a few weeks. Then it went into its chrysalis. Its been in its chrysalis for a long, long time. Eventhough it's a caterpillar I still love it! I hope my butterfly stays in that form for a long time, but I don't know if it will.

I think the most fascinating fact is that caterpillars have bristles that protect them when they are going to be eaten by an animal. The Painted Lady only has two weeks to live, isn't that sad? When a caterpiller is in it's pupa it's very cool.

The most fascinating fact that I learned so far about caterpillars is some caterpillars hibernate like bears too.

i think butterflies are the most awesome insect ever! Did you know that when butterflies first come out of the crysalis the wings are all wet and after a couple of hours they are all dry.

At October 1, 2009 5:45 PM , Anonymous Sahil said...

Keanu, that is pretty interesting as far as I think.Joe I have to admit that is very cool.
As most of you said, a caterpillar has 4,000 muscles. That is very cool.I just can not wait till they come out!

At October 1, 2009 5:54 PM , Anonymous Sahil said...

Jada,I also wonder when they will emerge from the crysilis.Hannah, that is cool fact to.Emma Key,I hope that it lives long enough to lay eggs just like you want it to live long.

I like that some of you said how it got its name.I think its cool on how they got there name from New England.Raychel, that makes me sad to,very sad.

I can not wait to see the butterflies come out and we can see them do a complete life cycle!
I hope that they are so colorful just like in the pictures that they have in books.

I love the one of the caterpillar on the tree.
It is my favorite one!

Butterflies and moths both have 4 wings and I always thought they had 2. The Painted Lady Butterfly sort of looks like the Buckeye Butterfly. I think caterpillars are interesting because when they move their head side to side they are spinning silk like a spider.

Monarchs don't taste good to birds. One other butterfly looks just like the Monarch because it doesn't want to get eaten.

At October 8, 2009 8:30 PM , Anonymous Robert said...

Gregory,I also thought butterflys and moths had two wings too. But actually they have four.Today me and my class let our butterflys free!!! I think there was one catepillar still in its chrysalis when we let them free.

I think you should pack a pair of pants and a pair of shorts with one long sleeve shirt and three t-shirts.You should also take a hat and a first aid kit.I hope you ind a monarch butterflies and some caterpillars in the chrysalis. If you do please take a picture of it and bring it in when you get back. Can you ask the scientist if all chrysalises turn clear when the butterflies are about to come out.

Miss Turner and students-I am so proud of the conversations that you are having about butterflies and caterpillars. I have heard a lot about butterflies and migration, which I find so interesting. How do these little creatures know how to respond to their changing environment?

At October 20, 2009 9:53 AM , Anonymous Mrs. Goggin's class said...

We think it is amazing how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly because they look so different from how they started. We learned that is called metamorphosis. Another animal that goes through metamorphosis is a tadpole/frog.

Dear Miss Turner,
I think the most intresting thing about butterflies is that butterflies are amazing creatures. They have beatiful colors and patterens. They have intresting lifes. From catterpillars to the chrysalis to the butterflies.Well butterflies are not like people. We aren't catterpillars. However cattipillars are kids, and butterflies are adults so that's the same. But they don't have clothes.

What I though about the caterpillers was hanging in there cyrsiles and metamorphosis that means change. It was also cool when they came out of there pupal stage and let there wings dry.

What i think is cool about butterflies is they can blend in with things and suprise predaders. They are also VERY pretty.

I love when my caterpiller started to form into a crisais and when it made a silk button at the top of the cup.I also love when my caterpiller started to turn into a butterfly. The best part is when we let are butterflys go.

butterflies are beautiful.they have 4 wings
because if you look real close youll see.Another thing is that some butterflies have camouflage and another word for that is metamorphosis.

We think all of the scientists are wearing bright colors, like the orange vests, because they all want to be seen by hunters. They DON'T want to blend in. They would all want to wear long sleeves and pants for protection. To find out if the caterpillars are doing anything different, the scientists have to do things in the same way. This will help them to learn about caterpillars and how they live. Mrs. Goggin's and Mrs. Manna's class

I think caterpillars and butterflies are interesting because its cool how they form and have to do each different step before they turn into an adult butterfly!

I love how they have fake eyes too!! I also love how they slowly get out and become a Butterfly. How long did it take for your Butterflys to Become a Full size butterfly from stage 1 to 4 ???

I like seeing butterflies change and seeing them go into different stages. Its so weird but cool just looking at it and then it just becomes a butterfly. Its so cool! How long dose it take to be a full size butterfly? =)

i also think that we had a great time experimenting on the butterflies and watching them go through there life cycle. Also i thought is was great because we got to put them on or desk also. How do they just change in that so short of a time period?

I also agree, it was very cool watching these caterpillars, and what they do to survive and make their chrysallis. But the big brain buster i'm still trying to figure out is what do they do in their chrysillis? Oh and can't forget the time we finally let them go.

The thing that is most interisting on this site is how the larva of a wasp eats its way out of the egg and caterpillar. Then it forms a pupa on the caterpillar. I never knew that!
