Our team will conduct studies on the behavior, physiology and migration patterns of the leatherback turtles on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. We will help tag and identify turtles, record nest locations and help determine hatchling success. Researchers and scientists have been working with these turtles in for the past 17 years in attempt to understand the impact of human activities and pollution. This work has led to the establishment of a National Park and a Marine Biology field station.

Challenge Question!

Dear Class VI,
Later this semester we will study evolution and adaptations. An adaptation is any behavioral or physical characteristic that helps an organism (animal in this case) survive. I am challenging you to list and describe at least three (3) adaptations that leatherback sea turtles have that allow them to survive. These can be behavioral or physical traits. Think of what a leatherback needs to survive and then examine what structures or behaviors the turtles have that help them meet these needs. You you can use the resource page linked to the expedition landing page for some sources (The Great Turtle Race- might be a good place to start). You can also use other Marymount approved internet sources.

We will use the information you discover during our study of evolution and adaptations when I return! Good Luck!

one way is that their body puts mucus around the eggs when they lay them. This forms an extra protection layer that defends the eggs further so that different bacterias cannot get into the egg and destroy it.

Great job Oona. Glad to see your checking the blog.
Encourage your classmates to do the same.
More to come next week.
Have a great weekend.

Mrs Seshadri,
Welcome to Costa Rica! We read your blog every day and love seeing the pictures. We can't wait to talk to you on Monday morning!
We have some questions for you as we are also studying maps and landforms. The students ask: "Are there any lakes or rain forests there?", "What does Costa Rica look like?", "Where are you in Costa Rica exactly?" "Are you on the Pacific Ocean or Caribbean Sea?",
and "How do you tag the female sea turtles?"

Dear Second Grade,
Thanks for all of your great questions. I will try and answer them during my trip. Right away I can tell you that we are doing our research on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, near Tamarindo. This country has beautiful beaches but also is mountainous in areas. There are several volcanoes in the region. There are Mangrove forests nearby- I am hoping to visit them soon. I will try to post some pictures so you can see the landscape. I am looking forward to talking to you on Monday. We have been having some internet trouble here so remember to keep your classroom phone handy as I may need to call you instead of using skype.
Have a great weekend.

Dear Class VIA-
In response to Caitlin, please do write your 3 adaptations in your notebook and also you can post some of your ideas.

Everyone should proofread their posts before sending them, please do not use text message language when posting.

Thanks
Looking forward to speaking with you all on Monday- I have some exiting experiences to share with you--and I have only been here 3 days!

Dear "help me"-
Look on the resource page attached to the landing page about my expedition. Go to the "great turtle race" page and read about the turtles. If you click on some of the warning signs in the race page some describe some adaptations.
Here- I'll start you off--Turtles have a funny tooth on the tip of their mouth which helps them puncture Jellyfish--their main food source.
This is an adaptation--a structural trait that helps them obtain food and therefore survive.
You can also look up adaptations in your textbook to get some ideas and then check Marymount online resources, maybe you will find something in Grolier or Brittanica==keep searching.
It's okay if it takes you some time.
Ms. Seshadri

I think that one adaptation is the way that the turtles build nests with their back flippers to create a home for the eggs to keep them in wet sand and to keep the younger ones safe from predators who can only reach the eggs on land when the mother is not around.
