More about feces...

Hey there Diamondbacks!

I have heard from many teachers and I have noticed from your answers that you are doing some FABULOUS thinking so I have another very important question for you about feces. It is very important for a scientist to study the feces of animals. It actually tells you quite a bit about that particular animal. Can you think of 3 really important reasons for a scientist to study feces?

Also, can you tell me 2 reasons that you think studying mice and voles will help us to learn about how the change in climate is impacting mammals?

Oh, and one other thing. I am going to be talking about snowshoe hares next week. Could you please find some things out about snowshoe hares and report your findings to me?

Dear Ms. Livingston,

We know four reasons for studying feces. 1. You can learn what they eat. 2. You can see if they are healthy. 3. You can learn if the animals are old or young. 4. You can learn what kind of animals and where they live.

We know two reasons for studying mice and voles. 1. A lot of mammals are dying because global warming. You can learn how they are dying. 2. You can learn how and where they live.

We think that a bear ate the apples and the seeds in the traps because it has big, giant, strong claws.

Dear Ms. Livingston,

We used Google to learn about snowshoe hares. Here is what we learned:

When they are born, they are born with fur and their eyes open. They have long ears. -Table 4

It looks like a medium sized rabbit. -Table 1

They have white fur. -Table 2

They have fur on the bottom of their feet so they won't slip in the snow or ice. -Table 3

They eat leaves and grass. They live in the snow. They have camouflage in the snow so others animals can't eat them. - Table 5

Ms. Livingston,
We have been studying stories that have a moral and characters with talking animals. That type of story is called a fable. One famous fable is , "The tortoise and the Hare." We found out that a desert hare runs 45 mph and a tortoise can travel 1 mph. The moral of the story The tortoise and the Hare is WORK HARD and NEVER GIVE UP! So, we are going to work hard and find facts about the snowshoe hare. One fact is.. They travel 45 km per hour. Hope that helps.
Love, Ms Baker's Class
