Halfway there!
I think my body is really starting to adjust to this extensive hiking through deep snow, as today seemed to fly right by! Our lead scientist was confident that all of the team members could navigate the mountain effectively using a GPS, so he paired us up, gave us several data sheets to complete, and sent us off! I felt like a true explorer!
I was not lucky enough to
see any new wildlife during today’s adventures, but I did hear a coyote
gathering and it was unlike anything I’d ever heard before. I also discovered
some fresh tracks that provided evidence of mammals nearby. Rather than tell
you what those tracks were, I thought it would be fun to let you try and
guess them. You may comment on this post
with your guesses, and I will reveal the correct answers in my blog tomorrow.
Good luck!

Here we are in class ready to blog again! Thank you for responding to our postings yesterday. I think the tracks are of .....
:)
Chrissy IV-1
Hi Ms. LeSage! Thanks for responding to our questions and comments. I think that track number 1 are deer tracks, because you can kind of see hoofs. Track number 2 looks like it could be a brown or black bear, and I am not so sure about track number 3. It could be a bunny. . . maybe a smaller animal.
Can't wait to Skype tomorrow!
:)
Dear Ms. LeSage,
Hi! I think track #1 is of some kind of small animal such as a bird or some other small two-legged animal. It might also be some kind of deer or fawn. #2 I think is a bear or maybe even a dog. Well, track #3 is tough. You told us that it is easy to tell a squirrel track from any other because there tail leaves a trail behind them, so I think it is a squirrel.
Best Wishes,
Nina C. IV-A Section 1
Alexa F iv -B
Hi Miss.LeSage I have the answer to the tracks
#1 Is a rabbit, #2 is a bear and #3 is a deer.
I hope that the rest of your time in Utah is great.
Ena class Iv-1
Hi Miss Le Sage,
Are you having fun?
I think I know what number 1 is. It is either a deer or a fox. Number 2 might be a coyote, and number 3 might be a squirrel. I hope you have a wonderful trip!(:
Hi Miss LeSage,
I think that track #1 is a deer track, track #2 might be a bear track, and track #3 might be a squirrel track.

Hi Ms LeSage
I think that picture number 3 is a squirrel track because you told us that squirrels leave a little line behind them. I think that picture number 2 is a bear track because it looks like there is little nails at the end of the skin part. I don't really have an idea of number 1 but maybe it is a dear track.
Dear Ms. LeSage,
I think track #1 is deer tracks and track #2 is bear tracks. Hope your having the best time in Utah!!!

Hi Miss LeSage! I think I have the answers to the pictures of the tracks but I'm not to confident about this. I think picture #1 is a rabbit track, I think picture # 2 is coyote track or a bear track and I think picture #3 is a deer track.

Hi Ms.Lesage how are u? Are you cold? I miss u and hope your o.k!
Hi Ms. LeSage,
These photos are amazing! Class IV is really enjoying reading your daily blog and viewing all of your pictures. We feel like we are right there with you!
Is Track #2 a bear's foot print? It looks like you can make out 5 distinct toes?
Thank you for sharing all of this new knowledge with us. We look forward to our Skype session tomorrow and learning even more about ungulates!
Mrs. Sabo
Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the skype conversation with the Upper School students. OK, your quiz is a bit challenging. The only thing I know for sure is that #2 is NOT an ungulate track. I'm guessing it is a bobcat. I have no clue re. #1. For #3, the space between the pairs of marks in the snow is mystifying, but maybe the photo is deceiving. My guess is some tall ungulate, but an agile one. So, some sort of deer?
Looking forward to learning how far off I am.
Hi Ms.LeSage
I miss you a lot. Have you seen any interesting wildlife recently?
If so, what have you seen?
Back here in the city, it was snowing, but the snow was really light.
Stay warm!

See you soon!
Ann Marie B. Class IVA-2
How are you doing Ms. LeSage? I am going to take guess on whose footprints are whose. I think that Track #2 was a wolf or a coyote, but I don't know about Tracks #1 and #3.
Also, when I need to stay warm in very cold weather, I usually wear a hat, a soft and cozy scarf, and mittens or gloves. I recommend you do too.
I can't wait to Skype with you tomorrow!

Dear Class IV Sections 1 and 2,
I am SO impressed with your guesses on the animal tracks, and I am happy to report that many of you were correct!
#1 was a coyote. Congratulations to Zoe and Ann Marie for guessing correctly.
#2 was a bobcat. Congratulations to Caroline and Ms. Erskine for guessing correctly.
#3 was a Mule Dear. Congratulations to Alexa F., Caroline, Brianna, Ms. Erskine, Zoe, Charlotte S, Teddy, and Julianna for guessing correctly!
Bravo to all of the girls in 4-1 and 4-2 for making very educated guesses and demonstrating that you were listening very carefully during our Skype session on Tuesday :-)
Ms. L
Dear Ms. Erskine and Mrs. Sabo,
Thanks for joining in the guessing! If you check out my comment above, Ms. Erskine, you will notice that you guessed 2 out of the 3 correctly. Bravo! Mrs. Sabo, thank you so much for following my blog with your class while I'm away. I look forward to Skyping with you tomorrow morning :-)
Ms. L
Dear Alexa J,
I miss you too and look forward to Skyping with you tomorrow! I'm sure you will have some great questions prepared to ask me :-)
Ms. L
Dear Zoe S.,
I have not seen any interesting wildlife lately, but I saw something really cool that I'm going to post on my blog tonight after dinner :-)
Ms. L
Dear Melanie S.,
Deer, moose, elk, bobcats, mountain lions, and coyote all live in Red Butte Canyon. There is also an abundance of birds and smaller mammals like squirrels and mice. I have only seen deer and birds.
Ms. L
Dear Emily B.,
I'm going to guess that a towel gets more wet as it dries, but I definitely had to think about it for a bit first! That's a great riddle!
Ms. L
Dear Melanie C., Ann Marie, and Olivia M,
Thanks for the cold weather tips! I've been wearing 2 pairs of socks, along with lots of layers, a hat, a neckwarmer and mittens! You can tell Alexa J. that I'm not cold!
Ms. L
Dear Francesca,
I'm only hiking in Red Butte Canyon- one big mountain! My legs are a little tired, but I'm definitely getting the hang of it :-)
Ms. L
Dear Teddy,
I'll try and imitate the sound of a coyote gathering for you when I'm back at school!
Ms. L
