Halfway there!
I think my body is really starting to adjust to this extensive hiking through deep snow, as today seemed to fly right by! Our lead scientist was confident that all of the team members could navigate the mountain effectively using a GPS, so he paired us up, gave us several data sheets to complete, and sent us off! I felt like a true explorer!
I was not lucky enough to
see any new wildlife during today’s adventures, but I did hear a coyote
gathering and it was unlike anything I’d ever heard before. I also discovered
some fresh tracks that provided evidence of mammals nearby. Rather than tell
you what those tracks were, I thought it would be fun to let you try and
guess them. You may comment on this post
with your guesses, and I will reveal the correct answers in my blog tomorrow.

Hi Ms. LeSage! Thanks for responding to our questions and comments. I think that track number 1 are deer tracks, because you can kind of see hoofs. Track number 2 looks like it could be a brown or black bear, and I am not so sure about track number 3. It could be a bunny. . . maybe a smaller animal.

Hi! I think track #1 is of some kind of small animal such as a bird or some other small two-legged animal. It might also be some kind of deer or fawn. #2 I think is a bear or maybe even a dog. Well, track #3 is tough. You told us that it is easy to tell a squirrel track from any other because there tail leaves a trail behind them, so I think it is a squirrel.

I think that picture number 3 is a squirrel track because you told us that squirrels leave a little line behind them. I think that picture number 2 is a bear track because it looks like there is little nails at the end of the skin part. I don't really have an idea of number 1 but maybe it is a dear track.

Hi Ms. Le Sage I am not sure with all of them but this is what I think. I think number one may be deer tracks. Number two may be coyote tracks or bear tracks and number 3 be may be squirrel.

Thanks for the skype conversation with the Upper School students. OK, your quiz is a bit challenging. The only thing I know for sure is that #2 is NOT an ungulate track. I'm guessing it is a bobcat. I have no clue re. #1. For #3, the space between the pairs of marks in the snow is mystifying, but maybe the photo is deceiving. My guess is some tall ungulate, but an agile one. So, some sort of deer?
Looking forward to learning how far off I am.

How are you doing Ms. LeSage? I am going to take guess on whose footprints are whose. I think that Track #2 was a wolf or a coyote, but I don't know about Tracks #1 and #3.
Also, when I need to stay warm in very cold weather, I usually wear a hat, a soft and cozy scarf, and mittens or gloves. I recommend you do too.

Deer, moose, elk, bobcats, mountain lions, and coyote all live in Red Butte Canyon. There is also an abundance of birds and smaller mammals like squirrels and mice. I have only seen deer and birds.
