Wednesday 4-23-08

Hi guys!

I have some information for you guys. We had a lecture tonight on the history of Nova Scotia--starting with 4.7 billion years ago. I thought of you guys because we talked a little big about the rock cycle. I hate that I missed that unit but I know you got through it alright without me.
With me here, you're sort of learning two things at once! Bonus!!!!

Last night it rained lightly. That meant that the ground was damp this morning when we went out to check our traps. When we check our traps, we walk up to each trap and check to see if the door has shut. If it is shut, we collect the trap (pick it up) and carry it back to the meeting area. If the door is open, we leave it.
Since we check the traps twice a day, sometimes animals go in the trap during the day and sometimes they go in at night. If they go in after we have checked them in the afternoon, they have to stay quite a while. You'll have to read my comment about it in one of the posts. I did answer that question with more detail.
The animals actually go in the trap because they are curious. As you've noticed, some may not have very good short term memories because we recapture them. They also may also be desperately hungry for our food.

After we checked our traps, we went and did some map coordinates. You have learned longitude and latitude in Social Studies. We used a GPS device to tell us the coordinates so we could make a map of the area we're studying. We had to be very specific about where we were--writing detailed notes about what the area looked like. Think about describing the bus circle parking lot. If you have to tell about each parking space you could easily run out of new words to describe them!!!

We cleared more trails today. This means that we were on a piece of heavily wooded land and we were clearing a path so that there was nothing. My question for you is...
if we are clearing land (including chopping down some--but not many--trees), how can this benefit the environment and our goal?
Before you answer, I want you to remember what our goal is (why do you think we are trapping mammals and weighing them). Think about the uses of the trail and the possible benefits along with the possible disadvantages.
This one is tough so you will need to read each other's replies to help you. If you post something and then read someone else's reply and change your mind about your answer, it is ok to re-post.

We saw a beaver last night. Here is a video of it.

Here is a camera trap video.

I show you part of the field where I'm putting traps.

Hi Mrs. Krekeler,
I think that maybe you will find more animals hidden under the trees. It might help you find more animals this way. Then if you find more animals you know more about the population as well as the health in Nova Scotia.

Well I think that owls may live in those trees and if there are too many owls and they are killing off too many mice/voles than cutting down a few trees may kill off a few owls so that the Food Chain in that area is in balance again.

When I first heard you were chopping down some of the trees
I thought it would
be bad for the environment, which it is.But by cutting down these trees it is making it easier for you to find out your goal which is
to see if the mammals in the area are healthy, and more on what they eat.
This was a hard question for me especially since I was the first comment! I wish I could have heard the lecture it seems so interesting! Today was are rock Cycle Quiz which was a breeze thanks to Mrs. Evensen's teaching! We all miss you and hope to see you soon!

It is hard to answer this question because there seem to be benift for human uses only not for animals that you are catching. There is alot of disadvantages that could be thought of like since you cut down trees there is less places for the little creatures to hide and stay hidden. There is advantages too but the bad things are always thought of first. If you clear the trail this will make it easier to walk and set traps but it might scare the animals to get near or just make them curious and walk into the traps so there is more data that can be gathered. As I saw in the video where you where puting the traps in place, there is no trail to follow and there is places that you go to set traps that is not exactly where you would go on your daily bases. We all miss you and that beaver was so cute!

Hi mrs.krekeler could not get much help for the question i am the first one to post but ow well i think chopping down the trees benefits the environment by making some animals start making nests closer to eachother because there is not much space and you can trap one easily because they are not scattered. also i was wondering to voles like to be independent or with a group?

Hi again!
(Tuesday)Some of the ways people are helping the enviroment is to walk instead of driving, to not litter, and to turn off lights when it is not used.
Some of the ways people are hurting the enviroment is to use a lot of electricity, dumping waste into drains, and to use those old fashion lightbulbs.
I think that I am kind of in the middle and I really want to change the world.
(Wednesday)that is really fasinating about the traps but that would be really cool if you can trap larger animals!

How big was that beaver that you saw? I think that clearing parts of the woods would help you reach your goal because you set out more traps so you could catch more animals.More animals is more info on the climate change.
How does the camera work? Does it have some sort of trigger?

I am not positive about how it benifits the environment but I will try to figure it out. I son't think it is really benifiting the environment because that could be homes for animals. It might help some animals that live on the ground so when the tree is nocked down the animals could go in and have a safe place to live.

There are lots of disadvantages and advantages to cutting down a few trees. Some times they need to be cut down because there are just to many of them in the area. It sort of depnds on your purpose. Why did you want to cut down the trees? What was the reason that you cut them down? What was your purpose? How many trees did you cut down compared to how many were there in the area? Are there a lot of animals who inhabit the trees that you cut down? Did you secure the area to make sure that no animals or humans were going to get hurt in the process? Did you leave any animals homeless? It sort of depends on a ton of circumstances and conditions.

Cutting down the old trees will give a chance to some new trees (that had less place to grow) some more space to grow, not under some tall trees where there is only shadow not sunlight. Then they will grow healthier. For you, you will get your work done faster by seeing some animals that live in tree holes and don't come out in traps. It will help you with your information. Are you looking for birds too or only animals? If yes, then did you or some other teachers found any?

About the question I think that clearing land would benifit the enviornment and your goal, because if you are trying to catch an animal than you want to make it easy to get for the animals and for you to get there to chek the traps to but not to ovious that the animals would not go in to it.

You need to clear the area so you can make a path for the ATV. It is better to use the ATV so you can carry the 100 traps that you set. You set traps to catch small mammals (voles, lemmings, mice etc) for weighing, and knowing how many there are.

Chopping down some trees can be good for the environment but you have to keep in mind that too many is bad for the environment. It is good because the trees will desinigrate and make the soil richer. Also, the animals might learn how to find new habitats because their old ones were chopped down by you. Then, since they are moving around they might be more likely to fall in your trap. You guys really do have to think of every little step you make and what effect it will have.

i think that you guys chopping down trees is good for your reasearch and the enviorment beacuse you can find animals easier and the fallen trees provide habitats for the animals

I'm really not sure if I already did 10 or not so here's another one.
I think that cutting down some trees will help you in your goal because more animals would be tempted to use the path without that many obstacles. And in some circumstances, doing that can actually help the environment, like if one type of tree threatenedd to take over an entire forest and choke off all other plantlife making it impossible for animals to live there.

I think by chopping down trees yall are ruining some animals homes but you are also helping out some animals. For example owls and other meat eating birds might live in those trees so they loose there house and have to move somewhere else so that lets voles and mice and other small rodents a lot. Also yall are clearing a path for the animals. I think what yall are doing is great cant wait to see you again, RAH 4

I think that cutting down trees could help you clear a path to move supplies. Also wildfires could be destroying the forests or one kind of plant could be taking over the other ones.

This helps humans more than animals because it takes away hidding places and homes from the animals. Also it can help the animals by alllowing them to walk and run through the forest with out getting caught in a bush or somthing.

I think you can find anamials in logs or that sort, hiding. But i think chopping down trees to help you knolage about anamals is a good idea, because noe a anamial can make a little home in it.

Hey ms krekler
I think you are cutting down the trees to find animals. and maybe the is a dominating population that live in trees so that may balence out the food chain.

I think that if you decided to clear the area that could defineitly affect your goal of catching an tagging animals because that would destroy there habitat and could effect the food chain and even kill some of them i think that i a ba idea to clear the area. Im so happy you got to go on this trip. I bet it was very inteeresting and in the pictures you look very pleased and impressed.

I think it will benefit the land from making it easier to move around for u and the larger animals. It might make it a disdvantage for the small animals b/c they will not have alot of places to hide anymore. The cutting down trees will also make it alot easier to move the little car around.

hello, i think that you are cutting down trees is because maybe other mammals live in the trees and when you chop down the tree they go fly somewhere else! and that beaver was so awesome!

Hi
I think that maybe you will find more voles and stuff with the trees gone. It might help you find more this way. Then if you find more you will find out more about the population and health of them in Nova Scotia

Hi mrs. Krekeler,
You may find more animals because there is less cover to hide in, plus there may be predators in those trees that are cutting down the population of mice and voles

Hey Mrs. Krekeler,
i think that cutting down the trees was both good and bad. It was good because it is now easier for big animals to get thru the forest but it is bad becuase its a waste of paper and alot of animals might live in the trees.
talk to you later!

Hi Mrs. Krekeler,
I think that moving the trees and clearing a passage way would give animals more room to walk and run so you can catch them easier and study them.
