Today is Earth Day!
I want all of you to understand the importance and significance of what this day represents. There are so many wonderful resources available to us and we don’t appreciate them or try to protect them.
Our world has two types of people—those who have chosen to do something to protect the earth & our environment (animals, nature, resources to name a few) and those who have chosen to hurt the environment. By doing nothing, many people are choosing the latter choice.
I want you to think about what people do to help the earth and our environment. In your post, tell me three things:
1) Give me three different ways people are helping the environment. You might have to do a little research if you can’t think of any.
2) Give me three different ways people are hurting the environment. You might have to do a little research for this one too.
3) What type of person do you think you are? What type of person do you want to be?
Are you someone who wants to help the environment or do you want to do nothing?
Today we returned to East Port Medway. We checked our small mammal traps and did another field transect. Remember that a field transect is where we look for field signs (evidence) of animals. We baited our camera traps—threw scraps of food near them cameras to try to lure animals in front of them. We won’t be able to see the pictures until Friday so I won’t have any idea if we caught any animals.
Just to remind you: we are trapping small mammals only. We only have two types of traps: camera traps and small mammal traps. The small mammal traps are shown on the videos. I show you how it works and what it looks like. Only small mammals can fit in them—gerbil or hamster size. A guinea pig or rat would not fit—it would be too big.
Tomorrow we will do a little more of the same.
Several of you have asked, so here is a schedule of what my normal day looks like:
6:00 – 7:00am I wake up and run for an hour
8:00am breakfast & blog update
8:45—leave for work in the field
9:30-12:30 work in the field
Check traps in the morning
Collect poo (we have to do 5 different areas each time we check for it)
Field transect
12:30-1:30pm lunch
1:30-4:00 work in the field
Collect poo (we have to do 5 different areas each time we check for it)

Check traps before we leave
4:45-7:00 return home. This time varies depending on where we are working
7:30pm dinner
8:45-11:00pm upload pictures & videos from camera and work on blog. Believe it or not, the pictures and videos take a long time

That video of the porcupine swimming isn't working but I'll check on it later. I hope you find some cool animals you weren't expecting! Some ways people are helping the environment are: not wasting water (that's a bog one), planting more plants outside, and recycling paper and certain types of plastic. Some ways people are NOT helping the environment are: pouring dangerous-to-the-environment liquids down drains, using unsafe pesticides, and by littering outside. I am a person who helps the environment and tries to save it. Everyone should always be someone who wants to help their planet! We need to protect our environment and NOT destroy it! I hope everyone says they want to be someone who helps their environment.

I think I do help the environment a little bit. I always carpool to events where my friends are going. I also recycle and I don't leave light or other things on when they are not in use. If people litter, waste electricity, or use bad fertilizers, they are not helping the environment. I think that I am pretty good at helping the environment stay clean.

At my house I saved electricity. I felt good. So, I am a person who wants to stop the dumping of wastes in water bodies, who wants to stop using unnecessary electricity and cutting trees.
I want people to follow the 3 R rules- reuse, recycle, reduse, don't buy products if animals were killed to make it and use rechargable batteries.
The porcupine poo looked really like peanuts but of course they are not. Don't you get bored doing the same schedule every day again and again and get tired after such a long walk?

Three ways I think you can help the environment is carpooling, turning off lights when you leave a room, and not using the plastic bags and bringing your own bags at the grocery store. Three ways that you are not helping the enviorment is to litter, drive everwhere, and keeping lights and other electrical powered objects on all day or for a long period of time. I think that I have been helping the environment because my family and I have changed our light bulbs to power saving ones, we recycle, turn off lights when we leave a room, and we carpool to LOTS of places.

Does the weather affect the number of mammals caught in a day? It's really cool to learn about all these types of mammals. I think its really interesting that by setting up the traps and looking at each mammal, you can tell what kinds of animals have once lived around there.

Well that is a subject that I have wanted to talk to you about for a lon time. I have this theory about how we can stop people from harming the enviorment with car polution. When we started having cars they were very expensive and not a lot of people had them, so if you did that with a solar car it might work the same way. What do you thimk? Do you agre? If you don't may you please tell me why?
Also I read this article about a school that saved electricity sy having a solar roof. We could try and get a lot of schools to do the same thing. It actually looked very spectacular in the picture of the school, it had a lot of plants.
It would be a good idea to do this because we use tons of energy using electricity and that could real help.
I also think that our biggest problem is using to many cars with to much rising of gas prices. The gas isn't going to last. They are running out of sources, and we need to find a way to use a different type of fuel. I suppose that we mave a huge charity so that scientists can find out how to make cars run on water. By the way, do you know how they are doing on the dilemma of water fuel? Read any stories about the subject lately?
As you may have inferd, I have an extream pasion for saving the Earth. I think that we need to make sure that the animals that we have to day like polar bears are around for future generations, because it would be a crime if my grandchildren couldn't see their cute faces! :):):):) I am still trying to decide on what career I want to take, but being an enviourmentalist is a real possibility.

I know I've already posted but this morning I was watching the news and I think you will like what they said. They had a report about a bus that had solar panals on the roof so that it could power computers, cell phones and other electronics. It was like a bus for transportatiion of 15 people. It wasn't a solar powered bus but it was close and it looked very cool. What do you think about that, do you thik that we could do that for our buses at our school? do you think it was a smart idea, or do you think it sounds unsafe(I don't know if the person that put the panels on was a real mechanic)?
