survival skills Friday 4-25-08

mink footprint

me learning to make a fire during survial skills practice
Friday was a wrap up day. We checked the images on our camera traps and found nothing. :(
All of the food that we put out as bait was gone but there were no images. All we can figure is that there were some very smart animals out there.
Survival skills was fun. First Chris instructed us on how to survive if you are lost or stranded away from people--PLAN (acronym). Protect yourself, know your location, acquisition (obtain water & food if necessary), finally navigation (find your way to a stream if possible since that is where most civilizations are built).
The latter part of the afternoon was spent walking along the beach. We were given an environmental impact assessment assignment enabling us to utilize the information we had gained in the previous two weeks. This had been done recently by a team of professionals but the data was not in yet so this allowed us to draw our own conclusions.
Our assignment was to transecting skills to cover the area and look for evidence of animals (mammals mostly). Evidence would be burrows (where the sleep or hide), footprints, feeding signs (for example: shells in a pile or carcasses), scat, skulls, or an actual sighting on an animal.
The area was quite large--bigger than the entire MMS campus (including the baseball field and the grassy areas near the car dealership). Composed of grassland, ocean, beach, lagoon, pond, and rocks, the area was a little overwhelming for the five of us. The wind made the temperature feel even colder. Without the wind, it was in the 30s. With the big gusts of wind provided by the ocean, we were freezing (and nearly falling over).
We spent about 2 1/2 hours combing the area and found several burrows, feeding signs, and scat (fox and coyote mostly).
The assessment was to determine if building an oil refinery would impact wildlife in the immediate area. Because we found many signs of wildlife, we determined that it would be detrimental (harmful).
I have really enjoyed my fellowship and am amazed at the amount of information I learned. Details, so small, really filled in gaps and formed connections for me. I can't wait to share more with you guys!!!

Hey Mrs. Krekeler~
i am glad you had a great time! I am sorry that you didnt catch any animals though. I wonder how the animals took the food without being caught. Now i am thinking that animals are much smatter than we think they are. It makes sense that the oil refinery caould be harmful for wildlife.Cant wait to see you again!
R.L. Period 5
That sounds very weird. How did thoose animals do that? Do you have any theorys? I don't know how they could do it with out being invisible. Maybe they are different animals than just voles, because the voles weren't so smart as to avoid your other traps. If they were different animals what kind do you think it might have been?

Hi Mrs. Krekeler

Also im sorry you didnt get any pictures i didnt know animals were that smart also it could have been the cameras falt
Mrs. Krekeler i know that you are'nt every happy about leaving but i'm sooo happy your coming back, See you Soon!

Those animals were very smart about how to get your food without getting caught in the trap. I wonder how they did that. Maybe they have been in other traps but still survived and have learned their lesson. You have learned so much in these two weeks. I had no idea that you could learn so much information from things animals have left behind.(scat, burrows, footprints, etc.) The weather there seems so different than Houston's, even though it is already late April. We can't wait to see you!

it sounds like your having a lot of fun! i cant belive the animals didnt get caught! the animals must be very smart! i cant wait till you come back! bye!

Hi Ms.Krekeler
I was not able to post a blog for Saturday on time because me and my orchestra left for Fiesta, Texas to go to six flags from 6:50 am till 10:50 pm and plus i was exhausted when we got back but anyways what could have the animals done to take the food and not be caught on the camera how could they have done this.
GLAD you had fun but you must come back now!! :)
See You on Monday

Hi Ms. Krekeler!
I think it was a good idea to do practice survival skills because if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, you might actually survive for more than a day. I think that if a chemical factory was built near where you are it would affect the animals very badly, escpecially if the people at the factory didn't dispose of it carefully.

How did the animals do that???? that is so cool! Im sorry that you didnt catch anything but thats cool that you learned survival skills so know if your plane back home crashes you'll know what to do LOL!!!! I hope that you have a safe trip back home so you dont have to use your skills! cant wait to see you on monday RAH 4
I thought you would surely see a mammal on the camera trap so I was so sad to hear you didn't. Was the survival test hard because it seems like you knew what to do. This trip seemed like a wonderful experince and I wish I could have done all of the things you did! I hope to hear more about Nova Scotia when I see you tomorrow!
MM Period 1
What kind of animals did you plan on catching with the camera trap? Was the survival day hard and what was the most interesting animal you saw that day?
Can't wait to see you!

I also think that the oil refinery would be harmful because of the polution. It would hurt all of the cute litle furry animals. Can't Wait to see you Monday!!! So glad you had a great time.

hey Mrs.K i bet you enjoyed trying to catch animals except for the fact you didnt get any. It looks like your learning alot by the pictures too.
GC,4
Im sure it was fun and tiring at the same time to try and survive out there. i have always wanted to try it out and know what it was like but i would NOT want to be stranded on accident. I agree i think if there isn't much wildlife then it would be okay to put a oil refinery. Can't wait to see you!!
kt period 3
I'm so glad you had a good time and really learned alot of interesting facts to share with us. I cant wait to hear what ou hav to say and how awsome your trip was. I bet it was a neat experience to get to see all that seenary and learn about the animals. I also bet that the oil refinery is very harmful to wildlife beacause it could take over and destroy there habitat. I cant wait to see you again ive missed you!
AO5
man mrs.krekler it must've been freezing out there but i think if you were carrying flint with and some cedar it would have been easier to make a fire.
js period 1 :)!
In the picture of the paw prints is that raccoon paaws? Also in the second picture are you trying to saw a peice of wood from a trap?
AO5
In the second picture are u trying to cut off a peice of the animal trap?

Hey Mrs. Krekeler,
I think it is horrible that the oil refinary would be harming the animals and wildlife. I think those survival tips were cool! we all cant wait to see you and when you come back we cant wait to hear what you have to say.
jw3
Hey Mrs. Krekeler,
It stinks that you didnt catch anything, but at least you got to experiance it. I think that it is horrible that wildlife is getting harmed by the oil refineries. Are a lot of animals in danger? Are you building somthing or starting a fire in the picture below the footprints? we all cant wait for you to come back!
jw3
Heyyy Ms. Krekeler that is so cool that you got to make a video and put it on earthwatch. I didnt get to watch it yet but i can wait until i do. That will be soo cool to get to see a video of your experience in Nova Scotia

In Novia Scotia I beet that was interesting to tracks of animals but I have a quesion. Where all the animals you found mammels? In the picture it seemd like most of them where. Cant wait to hear from you!

Hi Mrs. Krekeler
I am glad you are having fun and enjoying your time. I am trying to figure out how the animals got the food without being caught on the camera. Well that goes to show animals aren't that dumb. I think that the oil refinery could harm wildlife because if it leaked it could hurt tons of animals and infect rivers. Anyways, I will see you Monday and have a great rest of the time.
Hey Ms. Krekeler
Its great that you had a good time. That sucks that you didn't catch any animals though. I've been to Nova scotia i had a great time too. but i didn't see any voles.
Nf per4
Is the mink footprint are on cement or something ? Cause its gray(ish).
Cant wait to see you !
SH p.2
That is really weird that the animals got the food but didn't show up on the camera. The animals are really smart to get by that trap. That corse seemed really fun! I am glad that you are getting home soon.
I still wonder which animal was getting by the traps.
Ok bye
MJ5
hi mrs Krekeler!
i am so glad you had a blast!! and i am sorry that you didnt catch anything. but i wonder how the animals would get the food? and how wouldent they get caught??
am4
can't wait to see what your research turns up.milli is fine. the oil refinery would be harmful to animals. now i know if our class gets lost on a feild trip you know how to survive.
MED3
Hi Mrs. Krekeler, sounds like loads of fun, but I'm sorry that those smart animals took the food and got out of your traps. Your survival skills project sounds like fun, but then also dreadful because of the cold weather. Hopfully when you come back you can maybe show us some of your skills. How did you make your fire? The reason I ask this is because I have made a fire before and there are multiple ways you can do this. Can't wait till you come back. BYE!! :D

Sorry you didnt catch anything. Its just like fishing to me, take the bait and they dont get hooked. How do they do that? See you soon.

Wow, all of this looks really cool. Was it hard learning how to survive with very limited amounts of resources?
MS Period 1
Hi mrs. Krekeler!
I'm glad that you are enjoying yourself! It's to bad you didn't see any animals though. :( Do you have any idea how those animals got the food without setting the traps? I agree that the oil refinery could be harmful to the wildlife. There is one more thing that I wanted to ask, isn't scat poo?
