Wildlife does live here!

We are still at Rocket Lake surveying the land for seedlings and saplings. We are about finished and will be moving to another site on Sunday. We had collected so many seedlings and saplings that the van was full so about 5 of us had to walk back to the center, which was only about a 10 minute walk. Along the way Mr. Doug spotted an Arctic Hare. This is one of the first bigger animals we've seen. I have put up some pictures of him as well as a video. Arctic Hares are much bigger then I thought they'd be. Absolutely beautiful with their pure white fur and black markings along their ears and eyes. I wonder if their is a reason for those??? Tomorrow we are finally get a day off. We going on a land tour in the morning. Hopefully there will be some polar bears out and about. I would love to see Caribou as well. We will eat lunch in town and the head off to the Eskimo museum. We'll do some gift shopping and then head to dinner. After that we'll be exhausted and ready to go to bed. Looking forward to having a day off. I can't believe how much work is involved in this scientific study we are helping out on.

Questions:
How far away is Churchill, Manitoba from Tempe,Arizona?
What did you think about the conference call on Friday?
Why do trees have rings? (I stole this one from Tom- but I found the answer)
What kinds of things can scientists tell from tree rings?

Ashley - the favorite part of my day off was definitely seeing the polar bears. It is so foregin to me to see wildlife such as that. They are animals I've only seen in a book. I can't get over how truly enormous they are. We went to an Eskimo museum and they had a stuffed one there. He was 800 pounds. That bear was as tall as me, but standing on all fours. It is unreal. They also had a stuffed walrus--ohhh they are not the prettiest animal on the ice that's for sure. There was also an Arcitc Timberwolf that made my dog look like a baby, and an adorable ring seal )s.k.a.polar bear food).

Mrs. Carlson,

We have some answers for you. We think trees have rings because they tell you the age, how good or bad the year was (which tells us about that year's weather). Light colored tree rings mean it was summer or spring which is when the tree grows the best and the dark rings mean winter or fall which is when the tree doesn't grow as much. Daniel thinks that maybe the tree uses bark to keep itself warm during the winter and then it sheds bark in the summer which is why the rings are dark and light. Emmanuel thinks that the ring is dark in the winter because there is less sun light because of short days. Josue thinks trees grow more rings for warmth. Gabriel thinks that studying tree rings can tell us about the Earth's environment.

Jesus Palafox wants to know how cold permafrost actually is.

Anniesse wants to know: What is your favorite part of the whole trip so far?

We really had fun video chatting with you on Friday. We want to know if you have time to chat with our class during the day? If so what time would be a good time? We all say, "HI!"

Mrs. Carlson,
Trees have rings because it shows the age of the tree. They get one ring for every year.

I am impressed with your answers about tree rings. You are all pretty spot on. As far as using the bark for warmth....well that might be stretching it a bit, but I guess you could say it acts as an insulator to some degree. However, a tree does not grow more rings to keep itself warm, in fact it's growth slows down in the winter months to conserve energy for the warm season.
As far as chatting goes - I leave at 9:00am you're time and fly to Winnipeg, Canada. I have a loooonngg lay over before flying to Denver, Colorado. So if the airport has wifi then I can chat with you on skype. If not, I'll find a hotel lobby that does. Just make sure to have skype on in the class and as soon as you see me log in, let me know if you want to chat. Hope to talk to you soon.
