Polar Bear Madness
Ok- so I have yet to see a real polar bear, but I'll keep my eyes open and my running shoes on. However, there is a polar bear skin rug here at the research center that I am infatuted with. It is so beautiful and way bigger then I thought. There is a whole story about this 8 year old bear that I'll share with you later. Another teacher and I were playing around with it today and acting like clowns. Here are some pictures showing you just how big the front paw is. There is another one of Mr. Chandler pretending to be attacked.
Questions for students:
How big is a polar bear?
How long can they live for?
Can a human out run a polar bear?
Why are they able to survive in arctic temperatures?

6 Comments:
1. What is the temperature like there now?
2. How long did the Northern Lights last when you saw it?
3. Are you going to help solve the problem of Global Warming?
Mrs. Deinhart's class at Carminati
Hello Mrs. Carlson!!! (from your class)
We miss you, but know that you are having a great experience up there. In answer to a couple of your questions....
Adult male polar bears measure 2.5 o 3 meters (8 to 10 feet) tall. They weigh 250 to 770 kilograms (550 to 1700 pounds)! Male polar bears grow (on average) 8 to 10 feet tall and weigh over 1400 pounds. Females reach 7 feet and weigh 650 pounds. (Richard, Darianna, Tiara, Jakob, Sandra, Eliseo)
And we all agree that NO human can outrun a polar!
Mrs. Carlson, (from your class)
We found that polar bears live an average of 15 to 18 years in the wild, but that they have lived up to 40 years in captivity. (Issy, Israel, Serenity, Khamari, Elaira, Natalie, Inca)
We also found that polar bears have hollow hair that traps warmth from the sun and delivers it to their skin. They also have 2 to 4 inches of blubber fat. This helps them to survive the arctic temperatures.
Be ready - we'll have some questions for you tomorrow!
Dear Mrs. Deinhart's class. The weather up here isn't that bad. It was about 45'F with about a wind chill of 15'F. It was pretty windy in the morning, but the sun was shining so that made it nice. In the afternoon it started to rain down pretty hard while we were out working in the field. I got to test out my new rain gear..it did good.
The Northern Lights were incredible. I was really suprised to see them this time of the year. They lasted for a short time. Cant tell you exactly because I went in before they were gone. It must have been our lucky night because we have never seen them again:(
As far as global warming is concerned...I am only 1 person so no I will not solve it on my own. It will take society as a whole to make changes in our lifestyles in order to reverse the effects of global warming. What are some things you think you could do to help fix global warming?
Hi Richard, Dariana, Tiara, Jakob, Sandra, and Eliseo! So glad to here from you. I miss you all so much. Well I am impressed with the info. you found out about polar bears. You must have used the books I left for you or used the internet...IMPRESSIVE! Look for some other challenges coming your way in my next blog. Make sure to look for a very special friend of ours that I brought with me to the Arctic, all the way from AZ.
p.s. -I'll take your word for it..no human can out run a polar bear. I dont think I'll test out your theory.
Hola Issy, Israel, Serenity, Khamari, Elaira, Natalie, Inca. How are you all doing? This is so cool that we can still communicate with each other even though I'm not there. Thanks for the email, I am missing you kiddos. You found some great facts on polar bears. So now that you kids taught me so much...now I just need to see one. However they must be sleeping or hiding out, because they are not around. Maybe thats a good thing????? I'll have to think of some more good questions to ask of you. I the mean time, think of some questions to ask me...I can't wait.
