Meet my AZ buddy

So I mentioned to some of you to read my blog so you could see my special travel mate I brought along with me. I didn't want to travel alone and I didn't want to be the only person from AZ. Some of you know him and some of you don't. Please help me welcome the devilishly handsome and terribly shy.....VERDI!!!!! Let me tell you....he is one big drama king. He was scared out of his skin to travel on the plane. I had to hold him in my lap the whole way...it was quite embarrassing. He made it through, but was not very happy with me. I introduced him to all my teammates and some of them had animals they brought along as well. This made Verdi very happy. He now hangs out with Curious George and Foo Foo the polar bear. I'll have to show you pics of them later. He has come along on all our field studies so far. At first he was too scared to venture out of the backpack, but as soon as he spotted a big tall tree....he was good to go! I've included some shots of Verdi in action. He is a big copy cat...always doing what I am. Very annoying!!! He is getting a little full of himself these past few days and even asked if he could have his own blog!!! Aye Aye Aye. Enjoy the shots of him and if you have any questions, he'd said that would be ssssuper cool if you emailed him.

Hi Mrs. Carlson!
We were very excited to see that Verdi was joining you on your expedition! Looks like you both are having a great time and learning a lot! We had some questions for you.
1. How much food do polar bears eat in one day?
2. What other animals live in the Arctic?
And a questions for Verdi too!
1. What have you learned about global warming?
We love reading your blogs and seeing what you are up to! We miss you!
Your Class

You're making me do research now???? Ok, well here is what I found. An adult Polar Bear can eat 150-200 lbs. at one time. That is like 3-4 Eliseos! Yummy!!!-ha ha The average eats one seal every 4-5 days or about 1-2 a week. But they can survive on one seal for 11 days, which many are having to do as a result of melting ice. To be considered a healthy bear its body fat should be 3/5 of its total fat mass.
Some of the other animals that live in the arctic are moose, caribou, arctic fox,, arctic hare, polar bears, lemmings, voles, black bears, arctic char(fish), and canadian geese.
Verdi saysssss:
I have learned that I dont want to live up here...it is too cold. Oh and I've also learned that global warming is affecting the whole earth, not just the polar regions.
I love AZ, but it's already so hot I can imagine what it will be like in 100 years. I found this pretty cool website for you check out regarding AZ and global warming.

Ok - I'll speak to you soon! Keep blogging. You can do it from home too. I responded to Kyla and Cassidy already!

Hello my name is Jake Eberhardy and i'm in Mr. Wojo's eighth grade science class. I was just wondering what you are studying on this trip. I know Mr. Wojo is studying mostly about vegitation. But i was wondering if all of the people on the trip are doing the same thing.

Jake - I too am studying vegetation, but from a different stand point. Mr. Wojo's team was called "point/center/quarter" or PCQ. I'll let him explain what he was doing. My team was called the vegetation group. We were simply studying the plants/trees/shrubs/ground cover in 50M sections along the tundra, Forest, and Forest tundra zones. I am now an expert on indentifying blue berry, crow berry, bear berry, sheperdia, etc.... Stuff I'll probably have no valuable use for in the future. But for now its fun learning about the vegetation up in the arctic. Its always good to learn about things that take you out of your comfort zone.
