Journey to the Arctic
I will be leaving for Churchill, Manitoba (Canada) on Sept.21-Oct.1 to take part on an expedition in which educators and scientists from around the U.S. will help gather information about the permafrost level and how global warming is affecting it. This trip is made possible through an educators' grant from HSBC. Their generosity has awarded eight educators from all over the U.S. to be a part of this particular expedition. I am so excited about learning all I can about an environment that is so foreign to me, as well as a subject I've only heard about on t.v. or read about in magazine articles. I can't wait to take the knowledge I learn and apply it to my world, as well as educate others on how to make positive changes in their world.

I've taught about ice core studies during earth science in the past. I really look forward to finding out what the current information is in ice core studies.

hey my name is brittney m from mr. Wojos 7th hour science class.
Hi Brittney and Amber. Got your messages. Yes- Mr. Wojo is a pretty cool guy. We are having a good time and the weather is actually very nice at the moment - about 60'F. Im from AZ so its quite a change from the 108' weather I left. Enjoy your school week. Email if you have any questions.
Dear Mrs. Carlson,
How is it up there in Canada?
Did you use the bear bell?
I love you and i miss you.
Love,
Kyla
Hi Kyla!
So glad to hear from you. The bear bell must be working because I havent seen one yet. I am having a lot of fun up here and making a lot of good friends. We are all learning alot. My favorite thing I've gotten to do so far is core a tree. That means that I drill a small hole in the tree to see how old it is by counting the rings. I did one tree today that was over 150 years old. This data helps the scientists determine if global warming is having the effect on the growth of trees and the vegetation that surrounds it. The only animal I've seen is a Candadian Goose. They are very loud when they are calling to each other and are constantly flying over us while we are working in the field. I hope you are all behaving yourselves. I'll speak to you soon

Hey Kyla -
Verdi is doing fine now. I just feed him lots of good food and he has made some friends too. We got to drill into trees today to see how old they are. It was pretty cool. Most of the trees we found were between 100-200 years old! I am going to try and post a video of my boring into a tree. Hopefully it'll work. If not I have pics up on my blog and a funny story about Verdi.

DEAR Mrs.Carlson
Hi its josue i just wanted to talk to you.my class read your blogs we answered your questions.my teacher said we have to think of questions for you to answer and I thought of one, what did you find in your discovery in getting the core samples. YOUR FRIEND,
JOSUE DANIEL PALACIOS
P.S HOW IS IT UP THERE AND CAN YOU TELL VERDI I SAID HI
Josue - the tree coring was harder the expected. The hardest part is screwing in the corer into the tree and removing it. Sometimes you're in very tight spots and crawling under branches to core the bottom of a trunk. Removing the core is like an art form. It is definitely a 2 person job. Often times it breaks which means more work back at the lab because now you have to glue it together in the right order. I will defintely tell Verdi you said hello. Happy blogging!!!
