Destination: Churchill

Greetings everyone, from Larkin High School in Elgin, Illinois! It’s hard to imagine that in less than a week I will be embarking on my first Earthwatch Expedition for the experience of a lifetime…

Please join me on this blog as I journey to the Arctic’s edge on special assignment to investigate the phenomenon of climate change. For ten days, I will be on location in Churchill, Manitoba (see Map) as a member of the research team at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre (CNSC). Churchill is not only known as the “Polar Bear and Beluga Whale Capital of the World,” but it is also uniquely positioned at the transition or ecotone between the arctic tundra and taiga forest biomes, ideal for this type of research.

What’s even more exciting to me is that this experience is an HSBC Live From the Field Fellowship which will enable Larkin students to interact with me while on location through this blog, live video conferencing, and satellite phone technologies. Over the next few weeks, I am looking forward to sharing this great adventure with you. To my students and other readers, since I will be your eyes, ears, and hands in the field, I ask: What questions or concerns do you have about global warming?

Together let’s learn first-hand how climate change is investigated scientifically.
