Why is It Green Over There?
Today we drove up into the mountains where there was an enormous wall of slate grey clouds. The temperature dropped, and rain began to fall down from the sky. The same mountains looked completely different from yesterday, all because of WATER.
Right above are three different pictures I took today. Look at them carefully. Compare and contrast them. Why do you think the clusters of trees and greenery are growing where they are growing?
Here's the daily slideshow of our activities.

Is that a living scorpion.
I love the pic of the dewdrops on the plant. I would love to try to measure the total volume of water on the plant.
Yes it was a living scorpion, and, unlike cockroaches, I did NOT frantically run away from it. I looked closely at it, saw that its tail was not curled in attack mode, and got my camera to photograph it. We thought it was almost dead because it was barely moving. We went off to do other things and came back two hours later to look for it. We didn't find it, and we thought an owl or a bat or a kangaroo rat must have eaten it. But then, suddenly, we noticed it right by the living room door. It was moving fast toward the light. I got a broom and swept it back into the desert. It scurried away, but first it stopped to curl its tail in attack mode. Now I'm very careful to shake out my shoes and sleeping bag to make sure there are no scorpions hanging around inside.
Thanks, David. Rusty, our botanist, calls those 'arts & crafts' pix. ;-) But since you talked about volume, we're back in scienceland.
Have you learned more abaut plants
Its cool how you hiked 7.5 miles. You most be really tired. I looked at the pictures of all the things you discovered and I'm wondering where you found the yucca plant?
I have learned a LOT more about plants, Juan. It wasn't that tiring, Justin. It was fun. Yucca are everywhere here--all over the mountains at a lot of different elevations. Sometimes there are clumps of twenty or more of them. Some are alive, and some are completely dead.
