The Southeastern Lubber Grasshopper
Today Mr. Nieveen found one of the largest grasshoppers I have ever seen. This Southeastern Lubber Grasshopper had spiracles on the side of its body that could be easily seen with the naked eye. You can see Mr. Nieveen's index finger in the picture. His finger is 2 1/2 inches long, so imagine how large this grasshopper is!
Day 2/Question #2
What is a spiracle and what do insects use them for?
Day 2/Question #3
If Mr. Nieveen's finger is 2 1/2 inches long, how long is this Southeastern Lubber Grasshopper?
Day 2/Question #4
Look on the website http://www.entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/orn/lubber.htm and look for "Habitat". List the 3 types of habitat that the Southeastern Lubber Grasshopper enjoy.

Spiracles are an insect's breathing pores. They use them to breathe and they are located on the thorax or abdomen. So how is the research going? I'm very curious to know how many different caterpillar species you have identified. I was also wondering how the weather was down there. The weather people in class today said ther was a cold front coming your way. Lastly I'm very excited about doing the blog because we will get to learn about what's going on in New Orleans and all the dicoveries being made.
Spiracles are holes on there sides to breath through.Caterpillars have them and so do a lot of other insects. These holes are very important, with out them they couldn't breath. That is what spiracles are.
The South Eastern Lubber Grass hopper is two inches long because it does not completely fit his finger...but it is still a big Grass Hopper!
A spiracle is a little hole on the side of the insects body. They're used for breathing in and out of. Humans also have 3 spiracles in the front of ours faces called mouths and nostrils.
