Roadside Caterpillar Collection

Today we went out to do our first "caterpillar collection" for the week. After breakfast we headed out to Honey Island Swamp in the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area. We began our collection of caterpillars along the roadside. We were successful in finding a Zygaenidae which is also known as the "Grapeleaf Skeletonizer".

Day 2/Question #1
Why do you think this caterpillar is called a "Grapeleaf Skeletonizer"?

These caterpillar are called grape leaves because they have purple spots like grapes, they look like the inside of a grape, and they are green like leaves, hence the names grape leaves! These caterpillars are very interesting!Have you ever seen them? What other types of caterpillars have you seen? Have you ever ran into a stinging caterpillar? Have fun on your Louisiana caterpillar expedition!

These caterpillars are called Grape Leaf Skeletonizers because they eat Grape leaves and only leave behind the "skeleton" of the leaf.

Ms. Uricchio and I collected two of these caterpillars, they have been my favorite so far, great coloration.

I have not been stung by a caterpillar but I do have a thorn in my thumb from a Blackberry bush.... :(

We think that the thing that the teacher from North Carolina found some kind of reptile.Like a crocodile because you found it near a swamp. Where do you think the rest of the animal is? How do you think it died?Is the Golden Silk Spider's web really as strong as steel? Is New Orleans still affected by Hurricane Katrina?

We think frass is a seed that grows off of a leaf. Also, we think you take it out of the bag because the moisture will kill the caterpillar. Can caterpillars live in the water? We thought it was fascinating that the grasshopper was almost as big as the man's finger. We hope you have fun learning about caterpillars! Talk to you later!
